2. Disconnect battery cables, negative cable first.
3. Remove stock backplate following the instructions given in the appropriate Service Manual. Retain stock air cleaner cover and buttonhead screw.

Installing High Performance Air Cleaner
WARNING
The element in this kit is specifically designed for use with the OE (original equipment) cover. Using this kit with an air cleaner cover other than the OE cover could lead to failure of the element faceplate. The kit may be used in conjunction with other H-D accessory covers provided the appropriate adapter recommended in those kits is used. If the element faceplate fails the cover could detach possibly distracting the rider which could result in death or serious injury. (00400b)
NOTE
When servicing the air cleaner, apply two or three drops of Loctite 243 (blue) to threads of all fasteners.
1. See Figure 5. Obtain breather tube (7) and breather bushing (12) from kit. Install one end of tube to nipple of breather bushing. Push until tube butts up against breather bushing. Repeat for remaining tube and breather bushing.
2. See Figure 1. Obtain backplate (1) from kit and one of the breather tubes (2). Lubricate tube with soapy water and carefully insert into the rear of the backplate. Continue to push until the first bend is clearly through the hole in the backplate. Repeat this step for the remaining tube.

3. See Figure 2. Rotate tubes (1) so that ends are pointing inward horizontally and breather bushings (2) are positioned as shown.
4. See Figure 3. Obtain Loctite 243 (blue), banjo bolt (2) and a washer (4) from kit. Install washer onto the banjo bolt then apply a small amount of Loctite to banjo bolt threads. Repeat for the other banjo bolt.
5. Obtain backplate assembly put together in Steps 1 and 2, mounting bracket (1) and four large i.d. washers (4) from kit. Install the banjo bolts (with washer) through mounting bracket, through second set of washers, through breather bushings, through third set of washers then thread into tapped hole in cylinder head as shown. Do NOT tighten completely at this time.
6. See Figure 4. Obtain the three 1/4-20 studs (1) and gasket from kit. Align gasket with backplate. Apply a small amount of Loctite to threads and install studs through backplate, gasket, then thread into carburetor Do NOT completely tighten at this time.
7. Obtain the 1/4-20 flathead TORX® screws (2) from kit. Apply a small amount of Loctite to threads and secure backplate to mounting bracket. Tighten screws to 6.2–6.8 N·m (55–60 in-lbs).
8. Return to studs installed in Step 6 and tighten to 6.2–6.8 N·m (55–60 in-lbs).
9. Return to banjo bolts and breather bushings installed during Step 5. Orient the breather tubes and breather fittings to provide adequate clearance for the intake mechanisms behind backplate. When banjo bolts are tightened, the barbed portion of the breather bushings should be near horizontal, and tubes in front of backplate should be facing inward shown in Figure 4. Tighten the banjo bolts to 14–16 N·m (10–12 ft-lbs).
NOTE
Crankcase ventilation is critical for proper oil system operation. If the tubes appear kinked anywhere, reorient tubes. If necessary, loosen banjo bolt to reorient tube.

Air Cleaner Maintenance
NOTE
See Air Cleaner Service Parts page. Whenever air cleaner maintenance is performed, apply Loctite 243 (blue) to all fasteners (both male and female).
  1. Remove air cleaner cover and inspect element every 5000 miles or more often under dusty conditions.
  2. To clean element, remove and wash by rolling it, on edge, in a shallow pan containing enough Air Cleaner/Degreaser, Part No. 99883-88T to cover no more than 3/4 the depth of filter pleats. Do not let dirty solution get inside element.
  3. Remove element from cleaner/degreaser and allow five minutes for cleaner to dissolve dirt. From the inside out, rinse the element with cold water. Shake and allow to air dry. Do not dry with compressed air.
  4. Re-oil element using Air Cleaner Oil, Part No. 99882- 88T. Apply along the full length of each pleat and allow to set until the element is a uniform color. Allow excess oil to drain.
  5. Install element and cover.
