Kit Contents
There are no Service Parts available with this kit.
A Service Kit (P/N 62993-03) for the dipstick is available at any Harley-Davidson dealer. The Service Kit includes two set screws, one outer O-ring and one inner O-ring.
INSTALLATION and REMOVAL
  1. Remove OE (Original Equipment) dipstick.
  2. NOTE
The dipstick is designed to be viewed at an angle when rider is off of vehicle and vehicle is on sidestand. Due to the design of the LCD readout, the dipstick will not be able to be viewed at all angles (i.e. when riding).
  3. To install dipstick, screw dipstick in and note orientation of the display.
  4. To remove dipstick, unscrew dipstick counterclockwise and remove.
Dipstick Operation
  1. Push button in once=Temperature displays for approximately 6 seconds.
  2. Push button in and hold=Temperature units toggle between degrees F and C.
  3. Push button in twice (Display Flashes)=The screen stays on for approximately 3 minutes. Push button again to turn off.
To Re-orient Display
  1. See Figure 1. Loosen the two small set screws (3) on the side of the lower half of the dipstick.
  2. Gently separate the top (2) and bottom (4) halves being very careful not to break the wires (8). NOTE: Using the small screwdriver, very gently pry between the halves until they can be pulled apart.
  3. Orient to the desired location by re-engaging the splines (7) on the inner top and bottom halves.
  4. Push the top (2) and bottom (4) halves together firmly and re-tighten the two setscrews (3). There is a thin O-ring (6) inside the housing that needs to be seated firmly or the setscrews will damage the hard plastic splines (7) around the top housing.
Changing from Fahrenheit to Centigrade
The dipstick readout can be changed to read from Fahrenheit to Centigrade by pressing and holding the button "in" for approximately 5 seconds. Repeat step to return to Fahrenheit.
The Nature of the Liquid Crystal Display
Due to the nature of Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD's), the readout will not display the oil temperature properly when the body (where the PC Board and LCD reside) is exposed to extreme temperatures. Extreme temperatures can exist in stop and go traffic and/or parade duty combined with high ambient temperatures. If this situation occurs, do not be alarmed as the LCD will not be damaged and will function properly when the LCD has the opportunity to return back to its normal operating temperature.
Note also that the LCD may appear not to be reading properly in direct bright sunlight. The readout in direct bright sunlight may appear as "888". This can be overcome by shading the readout to achieve a proper reading.
Battery Replacement
The LCD dipstick readout uses a CR 2032 Lithium battery, part number 66373-06.
NOTICE
Read the following instructions and make sure you fully understand them prior to replacing the battery. If the procedure is not within your capabilities, or you do not have the correct tool, have a Harley-Davidson dealer replace the battery. Improper installation could result in damage to this product. 3. Using a mechanics pick or a small screwdriver, carefully insert the tool under the battery (2). Gently pry battery free. Discard battery.
NOTE
When performing the following step, see Figure 3. Be sure to tilt the battery down and engage the battery under the clips before pushing down into battery holder. Pushing the battery straight down onto the clips can result in bent clips and a short circuit which will destroy the unit.
4. See Figure 3. Install new battery (with negative side facing circuit board, positive-side facing opening) into top half of the plastic rectangular holder (1). Gently push on the opposite end of battery until the spring tab (2) "clicks" it into position.
5. Refer to Figure 1. Orient to the desired location by re-engaging the splines (7) between the top (2) and bottom (2) halves.
NOTE
Apply Loctite® 243 (blue) (Harley-Davidson part number 99642-97) to the two set screws prior to installation.
6. Push the top and bottom halves together firmly and re-tighten the two setscrews (3). There is a thin O-ring (6) inside the housing that needs to be seated firmly or the setscrews will damage the plastic splines (7) around the upper housing.
7. Install the two small slotted setscrews and tighten securely.
8. Install dipstick.
9. Check operation by pressing button on face.
