PREPARATION
1. Refer to POWER DISCONNECT in the owner's manual and follow the instructions to prevent the security module from actuating the siren.
WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative (-) cable first) before proceeding. (00307a)
WARNING
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)
2. Refer to the owner's manual and follow the instructions to remove the seat and disconnect the battery cables, negative (-) cable first. Retain all seat mounting hardware.
NOTE
For 2004 and later Sportster® models, the negative battery cable is most easily disconnected at the engine crankcase.
3. Remove the battery from the vehicle.
INSTALLATION
1. See Figure 1. Locate the siren connector (2) on the main harness, behind the harness shield forward of the battery location. It is covered by a dust cap. Pull the dust cap from the connector, and feed the connector downward and out from behind the shield.
2. Select the correct siren harness (3) for this model year vehicle from the kit. Route the three-pin connector (1) of the siren harness from the bottom of the motorcycle, between the primary cover and frame tube. Plug the connector into the siren harness connector (2) on the vehicle main harness.

6. See Figure 3. Connect the long lead of the siren harness (2) to the siren (1).
7. See Figure 4. Position the siren and bracket assembly (1) so that the connector (2) is facing toward the left side of the motorcycle. Insert the rear of the assembly over the rear frame crossmember, and slide the assembly to the rear until the front of the brackets clear the front crossmember. Swing the front of the brackets up so that the upper and lower bracket flanges are above the front crossmember. Slide the brackets forward and allow the bracket flanges to rest on the crossmembers.
NOTE
Keep the siren harness away from moving parts, sharp edges, and hot areas, and out of sight as much as possible.
For siren with antenna (shown): Do not secure the siren antenna (3) with the harness. Allow the antenna to hang free.

8. ALL sirens: Push the harness into the opening, and secure the harness to the frame using cable straps from the kit.
NOTE
For ease in assembly and increased clearance, insert the cap screws through the brackets and frame crossmembers from the top.
9. See Figure 5. Align the siren bracket mounting holes with the rightmost set of holes in the frame crossmembers. Secure the brackets using the two hex head cap screws and lock nuts from the kit.
10. For siren WITHOUT antenna: Continue after step 18. For siren WITH antenna: Clean the top and inside surface of the left-side frame tube with a mixture of 50-70% isopropyl alcohol and 30-50% water. Allow to dry thoroughly.

3Plain-backed loop fastener
Figure 6. Secure the Siren Antenna to the Frame
11. See Figure 6. Get the adhesive-backed hook fastener (2) from the kit. Peel the paper backing from the fastener adhesive, and attach the fastener to the cleaned area of the frame tube.
12. Lay the siren antenna wire (1) down the center of the installed fastener half, and straighten the antenna along the length of the fastener.
NOTE
In order for the antenna to work properly, none of the small diameter portion should touch the metal parts of the vehicle.
13. Get the plain-backed loop fastener (3) from the kit. Install the loop fastener onto the hook fastener installed on the frame tube, capturing the antenna wire to hold it firmly in place.
14. Install a cable strap from the kit around the frame tube, about 6 mm (¼ in) in from each end of the hook-and-loop fastener to hold it in place.
NOTE
Verify that the ignition key switch is in the OFF position before installing the main fuse and attaching the battery cables.
15. For ALL sirens: Refer to the owner's manual and follow the instructions to do the following:
a. Install the battery into the vehicle.
b. Apply a light coat of Harley-Davidson electrical contact lubricant (H-D Part No. 99861-02), petroleum jelly or corrosion retardant material to the battery terminals.
WARNING
Connect positive (+) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00068a)
NOTICE
Do not over-tighten bolts on battery terminals. Use recommended torque values. Over-tightening battery terminal bolts could result in damage to battery terminals. (00216a)
16. Connect the battery cables (positive cable first).
17. Connect the main fuse. Install the left-side cover.
WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
18. Refer to the owner's manual, and follow instructions to install the seat.
NOTE
The siren may not function properly when first installed. Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries discharge fairly rapidly when stored. They will lose as much as 1%-2% of their charge per day, and after a few months of storage at room temperature will be mostly discharged. If stored for a very long period without charging, they may need a few charging cycles to regain their full capacity.
To charge the NiMH battery, operate the motorcycle for a minimum of four hours.
SIREN DIAGNOSTICS
  • If the siren is armed and the internal siren battery is dead, shorted, disconnected, or has been charging for a period longer than 24 hours, the siren will respond with three chirps on arming instead of two.
  • The internal siren battery may not charge if the vehicle's charging system is producing less than 12.5 volts.
  • If the siren does not chirp two or three times on a valid arming command from the security system, the siren is either in chirpless mode, not connected, not working, or the siren wiring was opened or shorted while the siren was disarmed.
  • If the siren enters the self-driven mode where it is powered from the siren's internal 9 volt battery, the turn signal lamps may or may not alternately flash. If the security system activates the siren, the turn signal lamps will alternately flash. If the siren has been armed and a security event occurs, and the siren is in self-driven mode, the siren will alarm for 20-30 seconds and then turn off for 5-10 seconds. This alarm cycle will be repeated ten times if the siren is in the self-driven mode.
BATTERY REPLACEMENT
The siren's internal 9 volt battery is rechargeable and does not need to be replaced on a regular basis. Battery life under normal conditions is approximately three to six years.
NOTE
When battery replacement is needed, only a nickel metal hydride (NiMH) 9 volt battery should be used in the siren. These are widely available at local battery outlets.
To Replace the Battery:
  1. Refer to POWER DISCONNECT in the owner's manual and follow the instructions to prevent the security module from actuating the siren.
  2. Remove the siren box from the vehicle. Refer to the siren installation procedures in this instruction sheet.
  3. Open the battery cover by inserting a flat-blade screwdriver into one of the slots on the side of the siren box. Press until one corner of the cover pops up slightly.
  4. Insert the screwdriver into the second slot, and press until the cover pops open. Remove the cover and gasket.
  5. Remove the old battery from the siren box, and gently unfasten the snap connector from the battery. Save the grease coating the terminals.
  6. Coat the terminals of the snap connector and the new NiMH nine-volt battery completely with the grease from the old connection.
  7. NOTE
If not enough lubricant remains to completely cover the terminals, Electrical Contact Lubricant (H-D Part No. 99861-02) is compatible, and is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer
  8. Snap the connector onto the new battery, and install the battery into the siren box.
  9. Set the siren box on a work surface with the battery opening facing up. Position the gasket and battery cover onto the siren box with the rounded corners facing out.
  10. Press the cover down onto the siren box and press the tabs in with the screwdriver until the tabs snap into the slots in the box.
  11. Install the siren box into the vehicle.
  12. Dispose of the old NiMH battery in accordance with local regulations.
