1. | Remove the existing seat and passenger grab strap following the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. Discard the grab strap and retain all other hardware for later use.
2. | See Figure 10. For all except FXDWG: Install the shorter seat bracket (5) onto the new seat with the flange screws (12). For FXDWG: Install the longer seat bracket (6) onto the new seat with the flange screws (12).
3. | See Figure 1. Check for a seat nut mounted into the rear fender in both locations 1 and 2. If a seat retention nut and washer are already installed in both locations, proceed to Step 5. If a seat retention nut and washer are not present in either location 1 or 2, proceed to Step 4.
4. | See Figure 10. Remove the plug (if applicable) from the location the nut and washer are going to be installed. Slide the retention nut (9) onto the cable strap (11) so the wide end of the nut rests on the eye of the strap. Thread the cable strap up under the fender and through the fender hole. Pull up on the cable strap to hold the nut snug against the underside of the fender. With the rib on the retention nut seated into the notch in the fender hole, slide the retention washer (10) into place from the rear. This will lock the retention nut in place.
5. | See Figure 2. Cut the cable strap located at the front bracket (1) mounting location of the frame. |
Figure 1. Seat Retention Nut Locations
6. | See Figure 10. Move the cable bundles located directly below the bracket front frame mounting hole out from under the mounting hole and use the cable strap (11) to tie the cable bundles out of the way.
7. | See Figure 2. Insert the jack nut (3) into the frame hole located at the front bracket mounting hole where the cable strap was just cut.
8. | See Figure 10. Partially install the new grab strap (8). One end of the grab strap must be installed under the bracket (3), the other end must be installed above the bracket. Install the second hole (inboard hole) at one end of the grab strap over the stud in the fender so finished side of grab strap is towards the fender.
9. | Place the black bracket (3) from the kit onto the frame as shown. Capture one end of the grab strap (8) between the bracket and the fender.
10. | Loop grab strap (8) around and feed loose end into the space between the bracket (3) and the fender stud. Install second hole (inboard hole) of the grab strap onto the stud and secure using the flat washer and nut (B) removed in Step 1. Tighten the nut to 10.85 N·m (96 in-lbs).
11. | Apply Loctite 243 along the entire length of the threads of the flat head screw (4). Install the flat head screw in the hole on the forward edge of the bracket and thread into the jack nut (13). Continue turning screw until jack nut cinches up against frame plate, then tighten to 10.85 N·m (96 in-lbs).
12. | Insert the hex head screw (7) through the slot in the rear of the black bracket and into the new retention nut (9). Tighten to 10.85 N·m (96 in-lbs).
13. | Install the seat (from front to back) into position through the grab strap. Make sure that the front mounting tab is hooked under the frame bracket, and the hooks from the black bracket have fully engaged the seat. NOTE If necessary use downward pressure on the center of the riders seat while pushing the seat forward to engage hooks from black bracket.
![]() After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
14. | Attach the rear of the seat to the vehicle by installing the screw with lockwasher (B) removed in Step 1. Install the screw through the seat mounting bracket into the rearmost retention nut (9) in the top of the rear fender. Tighten the screw securely. |

1. | See Figure 4. The adjustment handle is used to move the backrest pad into the forward and rearward positions. The handle is located on the left side of the seat.
2. | See Figure 5 and Figure 6. To adjust the backrest pad forward or rearward, pull the handle. Leaning back against the backrest pad will help adjust it rearward. Keeping your weight off of the backrest pad while pulling on the handle will cause the backrest to come to its full forward position. Releasing the handle will lock the backrest into place.
3. | See Figure 7 and Figure 8. To adjust the backrest pad up and down, squeeze backrest pad in approximate location shown. Move the backrest up or down into the desired position while squeezing pad, then release when the pad is in the desired position.
4. | See Figure 9. The backrest pad may be pushed forward against seat as shown to ease in getting off and on the motorcycle without activating the release handle. | Figure 4.
