WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet references Service Manual information. A Service Manual for your model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from a Harley-Davidson Dealer.

INSTALLATION
WARNING
When installing any electrical accessory, be certain not to exceed the maximum amperage rating of the fuse or circuit breaker protecting the affected circuit being modified. Exceeding the maximum amperage can lead to electrical failures, which could result in death or serious injury. (00310a)
NOTICE
It is possible to overload the vehicle's charging system by adding too many electrical accessories. If the combined electrical accessories operating at any one time consume more electrical current than the vehicle's charging system can produce, the electrical consumption can discharge the battery and cause damage to the vehicle's electrical system. (00211d)
NOTE
This lighting kit requires up to 70 milliamps additional current from the electrical system.
WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. (00048a)
NOTE
For 2004 and later Sportster models, the negative battery cable is most easily disconnected at the engine crankcase.
1. Refer to the Service Manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and disconnect the negative battery cable. Retain all seat mounting hardware.
2. Remove and retain the two screws holding the tail lamp lens to the base.
NOTE
For models with bobtail fender, tail lamp and circuit board are reversed top to bottom from what is shown in Figure 1. On some versions, turn signal connectors may also be reversed, left to right. Note connector position before disconnecting.
3. See Figure 1. Depress the locking tab and disconnect the 4-pin multi-lock tail lamp connector (1) from the circuit board. Set the lens and bulb assembly aside.
4. Using a terminal pick, depress the locking tabs (4) and disconnect the two 2-pin multi-lock turn signal connectors (2) and (3) from the circuit board.
NOTE
The wires and terminals must be removed from connectors [18B] and [19B] so they fit through the turn signal supports. Before removing turn signal wires, carefully note wire position in each connector, referring to the wiring diagram in the Service Manual. Note also the routing of the wiring through the tail lamp base and under the fender. In particular, pay close attention to the locations of cable straps which must be replaced.

5. Refer to the AMP MULTILOCK ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS section in the Service Manual to remove the wires and terminals from the turn signal connectors.
6. From under the fender, remove the fastener retaining each turn signal lamp and support to the fender. Retain the lamps and fasteners. The turn signal supports can be discarded.
7. Obtain one of the new lighted turn signal supports from the kit (both are identical). See Figure 2. Feed the wires from one turn signal lamp into the end of the support opposite the wire harness, through the triangular opening (2). DO NOT feed the wires through the round mounting hole (3) in the support. The turn signal wires should exit alongside the support wiring.

8. Feed the turn signal support wiring connector through the wiring hole in the fender support and fender, then feed the turn signal wires through the same opening. Continue pulling the wires through the hole until the turn signal lamp and support are at the fender support. Be careful that the wires are not twisted or damaged as the lamp and support are assembled.
NOTE
For FLSTF (Fat Boy®) models, remove the original equipment flat washer from the turn signal retaining bolt before mounting the new turn signal support. The flat washer is not used in this application.
NOTE
For 2006 and later FXST models, discard the original turn signal mounting bolt and use the 2.75 inch bolt provided in kit.
9. From the underside, insert the turn signal fastener through the mounting hole in the fender, through the round mounting hole in the turn signal support and into the threaded hole in the turn signal lamp. Verify that the turn signal points straight behind, and tighten the fastener as indicated in the Service Manual. For 2002 through 2003 XL models, tighten to 132-216 in-lbs (14.9-24.4 Nm).
10. Repeat Steps 6 through 9 for the opposite side.

11. Route the turn signal and lighted support wiring to the tail lamp base, following the same paths originally taken by the turn signal wiring.
12. Refer to Figure 3. Plug the turn signal support wire connectors into the black connectors on the "Y" harness from the kit. Plug the white connector on the "Y" harness into the 3-place accessory connector [45A] on the tail lamp circuit board.
13. Peel the paper backing from the circuit board on the "Y" harness. Gently press the circuit board adhesive surface into the pocket on the inside of the tail lamp module to hold it in place.
14. Refer to Figure 3, and the wiring diagram and AMP MULTILOCK ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS section in the Service Manual to re-install the turn signal wires and terminals into the original turn signal connectors.
15. See Figure 1. Obtain the tail lamp lens and bulb assembly removed in Step 3.
16. Re-connect the 4-pin multi-lock tail lamp connector (1) to the circuit board. Re-assemble the tail lamp lens to the base with the two screws removed in Step 2.
17. Refer to the Service Manual and follow the instructions given to re-attach the negative battery cable.
WARNING
Be sure that all lights and switches operate properly before operating motorcycle. Low visibility of rider can result in death or serious injury. (00316a)
18. Turn the ignition on, and check the turn signal support lights and the motorcycle lamps for proper operation:
  • With the ignition switch "ON", the LED's on each support should be lit, along with the motorcycle's tail lamp.
  • When either the brake hand lever or pedal are activated, the LED's on each support should noticeably brighten, along with the motorcycle's stop lamp(s).
  • When either turn signal switch is activated, the LED's on each support should remain lit steadily, and not flash.
  • Turn the ignition switch "OFF". Both turn signal supports should immediately turn off, along with the motorcycle's tail lamp.
WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
19. Refer to the Service Manual, and follow instructions to install the seat.
