1. | Refer to the Service Manual and follow the instructions given to disconnect the battery cables, negative cable first.
2. | Remove existing license plate holder and discard. Retain license plate and hardware for future use.
3. | See Figure 1. Remove the taillight cover and disconnect the left (1) and right (2) turn signal wires at the connectors. See the TAIL LAMP section of the Service Manual.
4. | If your model motorcycle is equipped with a rear fender tip lamp, disconnect tip lamp wire connector (3).
5. | See Service Parts Illustration. Remove the existing directional bar (1) from the motorcycle and discard. Retain hex flange lock screws for re-use.
6. | If your model motorcycle is equipped with a rear fender tip lamp or fender cover (2), remove and discard it along with lock nuts and washers and proceed to step 10. If your motorcycle does not have a rear fender tip lamp or fender cover, proceed to step 7. NOTE To avoid damaging the fender surface in the next step, do not use tools or abrasive cleaners to remove the adhesive residue from fender. Try and stay within the area that the new bumper guard will cover. |

7. | If your motorcycle is equipped with a rear fender medallion, it will have to be removed. Using a approximately 18 in. (0.46m) of fishing line (or string), start a side-to-side "sawing" motion and work the fishing line under the medallion. This motion will break the adhesive bond between the medallion and the fender surface. Remove medallion.
8. | Clean the fender surface with a mixture of 50% to 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% to 50% distilled water. Allow to dry.
9. | See Service Parts Illustration. Remove the backing material from the new rear fender bumper guard (22) and place bumper guard over area where medallion was removed. |
Figure 2. License Plate Light Connections
10. | Install chrome plastic fender cover (2) using two button head screws (23), washers (15) and nylon lock nuts (7). Tighten nuts using reasonable torque to attain a snug fit without cracking or buckeling surface of plastic fender cover. Do not exceed 30 in-lbs (3.4 Nm). NOTE The license plate light wire connector should not be attached to wires until wires are routed into the tail lamp assembly.
11. | See Service Parts Illustration. Feed the left and right turn signal wires (10) and license plate light wires (11) of the new directional bar through fender and secure directional bar to the motorcycle using the two hex flange lock screws saved from step 5. Tighten screws to 84-144 in-lbs (9.5-16.3 Nm).
12. | From inside the rear fender, feed the left and right turn signal wires and license plate light wires from the directional bar up and through the tail lamp assembly holes. NOTE After making wire connections and routing wires, check to make sure that no wires are hanging loose from fender.
13. | See Figure 2. Connect the two license plate light wire pins (1) into the outside pin holes (3) in the license plate light connector (2). Push wires into pin holes until they snap in place.
14. | See Figure 1. Install license plate light wire connector into license plate lamp assembly connector (3).
15. | Install the left and right directional wire connectors into the tail lamp assembly sockets (1,2).
16. | See Parts Illustration. Install support tube cover (4) using two button head cap screws (8) from kit.
17. | Install license plate and reflector bracket (5) over directional bar assembly using the license plate hardware saved earlier.
18. | Remove backing from reflector (6) and install on reflector bracket.
19. | Loosen license plate side adjustment screws (12) and adjust plate (13) to fit your license plate size. Tighten side screws.
WARNING Connect positive (+) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00068a)
20. | Connect the battery cables, positive cable first. NOTE Check for proper turn signal operation before riding motorcycle. Weak, intermittent, or non-operational lights indicate a poor connection or a short in the wires.
WARNING Be sure that all lights and switches operate properly before operating motorcycle. Low visibility of rider can result in death or serious injury. (00316a)
21. | Start the motorcycle and make sure that both turn signals, lamp assembly and license plate light function properly. NOTE If rear turn signal lights operate opposite of switch function, turn off motorcycle, remove and reverse turn signal electrical connectors in tail lamp assembly. Start motorcycle and test rear turn signals again for proper function.
22. | Install tail lamp cover (3) onto the tail lamp assembly using the two screws (9) provided in kit. Tighten screws to 20-24 in-lbs (4.5-5.4 Nm). NOTE Installation of the Tail Lamp Cover on 1999 to early 2003 models requires Tail Lamp Socket part number 68370-03A to be used. |
