Models
This kit fits VRSC (V-Rod®) models that have been modified to VRXSE (V-Rod Destroyer®) specifications for racing applications.
If installed on VRSC models with original equipment (OE) cams, severe engine damage WILL occur.
NOTE
This kit is intended for High Performance applications only. Engine related performance parts are intended for the experienced rider only.
Additional Parts Required
NOTE
This Cylinder Head Kit MUST be used along with a Screamin' Eagle Pro VRXSE Destroyer Cam Kit (H-D Part Number 25020-05).
Engine removal from the chassis and top end disassembly may require a number of new replacement parts, including the required new cylinder head gaskets. Inspection of parts for service wear limits may indicate additional part replacement. Part numbers for any required new or replacement parts can be found in the Parts Catalog for your year and model vehicle or the same-year VRXSE model. Both are available from a Harley-Davidson Dealer.
WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet references Service Manual information. A VRSC Models Service Manual for your year and model vehicle AND an Owner's, Service, Setup Manual for the same-year VRXSE model are required for this installation. Both are available from a Harley-Davidson Dealer.
The Specifications and Service Wear Limits for the Screamin' Eagle Pro VRXSE Destroyer Cylinder Heads will be found in the VRXSE Owner's, Service, Setup Manual.
Tools Required
Each Service Manual procedure will require special tools. These tools are identified in the VRSC Models Service Manual for your year and model vehicle or the Owner's, Service, Setup Manual for the same-year VRXSE model, and are available through the SPX Kent-Moore Special Service Tools catalog.
NOTICE
You must recalibrate the ECM when installing this kit. Failure to properly recalibrate the ECM can result in severe engine damage. (00399b)
ECM recalibration is required using the Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner Kit (Part Number 32107-01D). See a Harley-Davidson dealer.
Kit Contents
See Figure 4 and Table 1.
Prepare the Motorcycle for Service
1. Remove the right side cover and maxi-fuse.
2. Follow the Service Manual instructions to remove the air box cover.
WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative (-) cable first) before proceeding. (00307a)
WARNING
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)
3. Disconnect the battery, negative (-) cable first.
INSTALLATION
The installation of this kit is divided into four sections:
  1. Remove the engine from the chassis.
  2. Remove the cam drive and cylinder heads.
  3. Assemble the cam drive and new cylinder head to the engine.
  4. Install the engine in the chassis.
1. Remove the Engine from the Chassis
WARNING
Coolant mixture contains toxic chemicals, which may be fatal if swallowed. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting; call a physician immediately. Use in a well ventilated area. Irritation to skin or eyes can occur from vapors or direct contact. In case of skin or eye contact, flush thoroughly with water and go to hospital, if necessary. Dispose of used coolant according to federal, state and local regulations. (00092a)
WARNING
When servicing the fuel system, do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks in the vicinity. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00330a)
  1. Follow the Service Manual ENGINE REPLACEMENT: REMOVAL procedure to remove the engine from the chassis.
  2. See Figure 1. Follow the Service Manual STRIPPING MOTORCYCLE FOR SERVICE procedure to mount the engine in the engine cradle and stand.

2. Remove the Cam Drive and Cylinder Heads
1. Follow the Service Manual THROTTLE BODY procedure to remove the throttle body.
2. Follow the Service Manual ALTERNATOR procedure to remove the alternator cover.
3. See Figure 2. Break the cam cover fasteners loose in the sequence shown, and remove the cover.

4. Follow the Service Manual TOP END DISASSEMBLY: CAM DRIVE REMOVAL procedure to remove the cam drive and the cams.
5. Inspect the following components for service wear limits or wear indicators and replace as required:
  • Chain
  • Chain guides
  • Sprockets
6. Remove the breather tube/ "O"-ring and set aside for installation on the new Screamin' Eagle Pro front cylinder head.
7. Follow the Service Manual CYLINDER HEAD SERVICE: HEAD DISASSEMBLY procedure to remove the cylinder heads.

8. See Figure 3. Clean the oil film from the tappets. Number each tappet with the number cast in the cylinder head.
9. Remove the tappets and valve shims.
10. Inspect the tappets and shims for wear indicators, and replace as required. Set aside for re-installation in the same location.
3. Assemble the Cam Drive and New Cylinder Head to the Engine
1. Follow the Service Manual CAM DRIVE procedure to assemble the triple gear, primary chain and fixed tensioners.
2. Follow the Service Manual CYLINDER HEAD SERVICE: HEAD ASSEMBLY procedures. Search the procedure for installing the valve shims and tappets, and continue to install the cams and cam journal caps on the Screamin' Eagle Pro cylinder heads. Tighten to specification.
3. Continue to follow the procedure and measure valve lash. If required, use a copy of the Valve Lash Calculation Worksheet found in the Appendix of the Service Manual. Adjust the valve lash following the Service Manual VALVE LASH: LASH MEASUREMENT and LASH ADJUSTMENT procedures.
4. Follow the Service Manual CYLINDER HEADS: INSTALLATION procedure to install the Screamin' Eagle Pro cylinder heads.
5. Follow the Service Manual ENGINE: INSTALLING AND TIMING THE CAMS procedure to time the cams to the cam drive.
6. Follow the Service Manual VALVE LASH: LASH MEASUREMENT procedures to verify the valve lash.
7. If required, use a copy of the Valve Lash Calculation Worksheet found in the Appendix of the Service Manual. Adjust the valve lash following the Service Manual VALVE LASH: VERIFY CAM TIMING and LASH ADJUSTMENT procedures.
8. After verifying lash adjustment, install and tighten the spark plugs to 23 N·m (17 ft-lbs).
9. Continue the Service Manual INSTALLING AND TIMING THE CAMS procedure to install the gaskets and cam covers.
10. Install the rotor shell with the integral ball clutch.
11. Follow the ALTERNATOR procedure to install the alternator cover.
12. Follow the Service Manual THROTTLE BODY: INSTALLATION procedure to install the throttle body.
13. Install the cam drive breather tube in the front cylinder head. Apply a thin coat of grease to the rubber "O"-ring and groove of the brass breather airbox fitting removed from the original front cylinder head. Press the "O"-ring end into the cam drive breather hole next to the intake port until it seats.
4. Install the Engine in the Chassis

ECM recalibration is required using the Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner Kit (Part Number 32107-01D). See a Harley-Davidson dealer.
NOTICE

2. Before starting the engine, recalibrate the ECM.
Return the Motorcycle to Service
1. Install the maxi-fuse and the right side cover.
WARNING
Connect positive (+) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00068a)
2. Reconnect the battery, positive (+) cable first.
NOTE
Calibration can be supplied through any authorized Harley- Davidson dealer.
3. Before starting the engine, recalibrate the ECM.
NOTICE
When closing the seat, make sure the ignition switch is in the FUEL position. If the ignition switch is in any other position when the seat is closed, the seat latch mechanism could be damaged. (00196a)
4. Follow the instructions in the Service Manual to close the seat.
WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
Test Run the Motorcycle
1. Test start the engine. If the oil pressure indicator lamp illuminates, follow the Service Manual ENGINE: OIL PRESSURE: CHECKING OIL PRESSURE procedure to troubleshoot the problem.
2. If a rattle is heard during engine start-up, follow the Service Manual SECONDARY CAM CHAIN: ADJUSTMENT procedure to adjust the secondary cam chain.
WARNING
Be sure that all lights and switches operate properly before operating motorcycle. Low visibility of rider can result in death or serious injury. (00316a)
WARNING
Travel at speeds appropriate for road and conditions and never travel faster than posted speed limit. Excessive speed can cause loss of vehicle control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00008a)
3. Test ride the motorcycle and adjust the controls, belt tension, wheel alignment, headlamp alignment, etc., as required.
