| 1. | Position motorcycle on a suitable lift. NOTE If vehicle is equipped with Harley-Davidson Smart Security System, see owner's manual for instructions to disarm the system. | |
| 2. | Remove seat according to the instructions in the service manual. | |
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative (-) cable first) before proceeding. (00307a) Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a) When servicing the fuel system, do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks in the vicinity. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00330a) | ||
| 3. | Touring: Remove left side saddlebag, left side cover, and main fuse. Refer to the service manual. Softail: Remove main fuse. Refer to the service manual. Dyna: Remove electrical caddy cover and main fuse. Refer to the service manual. |
| 1. | Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and disconnect the battery cables, negative cable first. | |
| 2. | Refer to the appropriate sections of the service manual for cylinder head, cylinder and piston removal procedures. | |
| 3. | Follow the procedures in the service manual for inspection of parts. | Figure 2. 0.394 in. (10 mm) |
| 4. | The pistons in this kit are front and rear cylinder specific. The pistons may be marked with "FRONT" and "REAR" text or they may have a number on top. Refer to the table below to determine the front and rear piston if they do not have the text marking on top pointing towards the front of the engine. NOTE Install rings with dots or bevels facing up. Rings with no markings can be installed either side up. 4.000 inch cylinders do not use O-rings (part number 11273) on the top cylinder dowels. Therefore, do not install them when using torque plates or at final assembly of engine. Re-jetting and/or re-timing of engine may be required to realize the full potential of this high performance product. High compression piston applications require installation of appropriate compression release in the cylinder heads of they are not already equipped. Always check piston-to-valve clearance with non-stock camshafts. |
