WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet references Service Manual information. A Service Manual for your model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from a Harley-Davidson Dealer.

INSTALLATION
  1. Remove existing rocker arms per applicable service manual instructions.
  2. Install new rocker arms per applicable service manual. The new rocker arms install the same as original equipment rocker arms.
NOTE
Due to the additional lift created by these rocker arms, some of the clearances around the valves and valve stem seals will be reduced. Care must be exercised to make sure adequate clearances exist.
The higher valve lift can be calculated by: Valve lift = (standard valve lift / 1.65) x 1.72
MEASURING PISTON-TO-VALVE CLEARANCE
NOTE
After installing non-stock cams, check piston-to-valve clearance.
  1. Apply 0.12-inch (3.04 mm) layer of clay to crowns of pistons in areas where valves meet pistons.
  2. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual and assemble the heads and valve train and tighten cylinder studs to torque specified.
  3. NOTE
To accurately check the valve-to-valve and valve-to-piston clearances, the adjustable pushrods for the cylinder being checked will need to be extended to fully collapse the lifters.
  4. Wait ten minutes before turning the engine after installing pushrods. This allows tappets to bleed down and prevents you from bending push rods or valves.
  5. Turn engine through two complete revolutions by hand.
  6. Remove heads and measure clay at its thinnest point.
NOTE
Clay must measure 0.060 inch (1.524 mm) at its thinnest point. If this measurement does not meet minimum thickness, depth of valve notches must be increased. The depth of the notches must not exceed 0.135 inch (3.429 mm).
MEASURING VALVE-TO-VALVE CLEARANCE
1. Wait ten minutes before turning the engine after installing pushrods. This allows tappets to bleed down and prevents you from bending push rods or valves.
2. Rotate the engine to top dead center, overlap.
10.040 inch (1.016 mm) clearance
245 degree grind angle
30.031 inch (0.7874 mm) minimum margin on exhaust valves and 0.015 inch (0.381 mm) on intake valves
Figure 2. Beveling Valve Heads
3. See Figure 2. A 0.040-inch (1.016 mm) clearance (1) is required between the two valve heads. Use a wire gauge to measure. To adjust the clearance, grind the edges of the intake and exhaust valves at a 45° angle as shown.
NOTE
If the minimum margin of valves is reached before 0.040 inch (1.016 mm) valve-to-valve is achieved, the valve will need to be "sunk" further into the head by cutting the valve seat.
4. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the rear cylinder.
5. Compress valve springs and remove upper collar keys, upper collar and lower collar on all four valves.
NOTE
When valves are removed from the head, new seals must be installed.
See Figure 3. Free travel (4) must be 0.080 inch (2.032 mm) greater than valve lift.
6. See Figure 3. Install lower valve spring collars (1), upper collars (2), and collar keys (3). Check installed spring height. Add shims below the lower collar or remove material from spring seat to reach installed spring height. Remove upper collar keys and upper collars.
7. Assemble cylinder heads following service manual procedures.
8. Follow procedures in service manual and install heads and remaining components previously disassembled.
