1. | For ease of insert replacement wheel removal is recommended. Refer to appropriate section in service manual. NOTE Prior to removing or installing the rear wheel, the rear brake caliper must be removed. The cotter pin or spring clip for the axle nut must be replaced. They are available for purchase from your dealer. See your dealer for the correct part number for your model motorcycle. | |

2. | Place the wheel on a flat surface. Use a protective pad or a large clean towel to protect wheel finish. | |
3. | Remove existing insert by removing TORX® screws. NOTE Inserts are front wheel and rear wheel specific. This kit includes one pair of front wheel inserts (3) and one pair of rear wheel inserts (4). Verify that holes on the wheel and on the inserts line up before continuing. | |
4. | See Figure 1 and Table 1. Make sure that the wheel mounting surfaces and holes are clean and free of dirt or material that may interfere with installation. | |
5. | Position a pair of new inserts on wheel and verify fitment. Set aside. | |
6. | To reduce cure time the use of Loctite Cleaner/Primer 7649 is recommended. Apply Loctite Cleaner/Primer 7649 to screws and nuts per label directions. | |
7. | Place 2 to 3 drops of Loctite 2760 into one barrel nut (2). | |
8. | Assemble barrel nut through a hole on first insert and install assembly on wheel. | |
9. | Position second insert on wheel and thread screw (1) through second insert and into barrel nut. | |
10. | Repeat steps 7, 8 and 9 for the second hole. | |
11. | Torque both screws to 3.7–5.1 N·m (33–45 in-lbs) | |
12. | Allow Loctite to cure: a. If Loctite 7649 was not used wait 24 hours. b. If Loctite 7649 was used wait 30 minutes. | |
13. | Mount wheel to motorcycle. Refer to appropriate section in service manual. NOTE A precision balancing machine must be used to balance the wheel. It is recommended that a Harley-Davidson Dealer balance the wheels. |
