WARNINGFederal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 108 requires motorcycles to be equipped with rear and side reflectors. Be sure rear and side reflectors are properly mounted. Poor visibility of rider to other motorists can result in death or serious injury. (00336b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet references Service Manual information. A Service Manual for your model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.
INSTALLATION
| 1. | See Figure 2. Remove windshield (3). NOTE In next step, note screw lengths and locations. | |
| 2. | Remove all hardware that secures mounting brackets and vent assemblies to windshield. The nine screws must be removed with a T-27 TORX® screwdriver. Save all hardware and brackets for installing new windshield. | |
| 3. | Remove all old tape from brackets and apply new tape (Items 1 and 2) from kit onto brackets. Align holes in tape with holes in brackets. NOTE A hair dryer may be used to aid in tape removal from brackets. | |
| 4. | Install the center screw through the horizontal outer brace, windshield and inner brace. Loosely install the acorn nut. NOTE In next step, be sure flat washers are positioned under the acorn nuts. | |
| 5. | Loosely install the two outermost screws through the braces and the vent mounting bracket. Loosely install the washers and acorn nuts. NOTE See Figure 1. The horizontal braces must be positioned as close to the windshield vent openings as allowed by the fasteners. The left and right ends of the braces must be the same distance from the top of the vent openings. | |
| 6. | Loosely install the vertical braces and windshield mounting brackets. Install screws through the vertical brace, horizontal braces, vent mounting bracket and the windshield mounting bracket. | |
| 7. | Install the remaining fasteners. The nylon spacers must be located between the windshield and the windshield mounting brackets at the two bottom fastener locations. | |
| 8. | Confirm that the vents are parallel with the vent opening along the top and side. Reposition the vent assembly as required achieving the best appearance. Confirm that the vents pivot freely without contacting the vent openings. | |
NOTICE Do not exceed recommended torque when installing mounting screws. Damage to windshield can result. (00385a) | ||
| 9. | Alternately tighten all hardware to 2.6–3.1 N·m (23–27 in-lbs). | |
| 10. | Install windshield on motorcycle. |

CARE AND CLEANING
NOTE
Sunlight reflections off of the inside curvature of a windshield can, at certain times of the day, cause extreme heat build-up on motorcycle instruments. Exercise care in parking. Park facing the sun, place an opaque object over the instruments, or adjust the windshield to avoid reflections.
NOTICE
Polycarbonate windshields/wind deflectors require proper attention and care to maintain. Failure to maintain polycarbonate properly can result in damage to the windshield/wind deflector. (00483e)
NOTICE
Use only Harley-Davidson recommended products on Harley-Davidson windshields. Do not use harsh chemicals or rain sheeting products, which can cause windshield surface damage, such as dulling or hazing. (00231c)
Do not clean polycarbonate in hot sun or high temperature. Powdered, abrasive or alkaline cleanser will damage the windshield. Never scrape the windshield with a razor blade or other sharp instruments because permanent damage will result.
NOTE
Covering the windshield with a clean, wet cloth for about 15 minutes before washing will make dried bug removal easier.
Harley-Davidson Windshield Water Repellent Treatment part number 99841-01 is approved for use on Harley-Davidson polycarbonate windshields.
