2 | Gasket |
1. | Remove existing oil filter and oil filter adapter from motorcycle.
2. | Clean all residual oil and threadlocking compound from the threaded hole in the crankcase.
3. | See Figure 1. Match the positioning bosses (1) on the oil cooler adapter to the oil filter adapter.
4. | See Figure 2. Install the gasket (1), oil cooler adapter (2) and oil filter adapter (3). Make sure the oil cooler adapter locates properly in the mounting surface and the hex side of the mounting fitting faces out. Tighten mounting adapter to 24.4–29.8 N·m (18–22 ft-lbs).
5. | See Figure 3. Attach the oil cooler (1) to the lower frame crossbar using the screws (2). tighten screws to 27.1–29.8 N·m (20–22 ft-lbs).
6. | Install oil hoses and clamps. Tighten clamps to 0.9 N·m (8 in-lbs) |

Figure 4. Chrome Oil Cooler Cover
7. | See Figure 4. Slide the top of the new chrome cover (1) so that the two tab (2) catch behind the top of the oil cooler.
8. | Push down the cover and align the cover studs (3) with the oil cooler grommets and press studs into the grommets. NOTE If you have difficulty attaching the top of the cover to the oil cooler, loosen the voltage regulator fasteners to provide more room for the oil cooler cover installation. After the cover is attached, tighten voltage regulator fasteners to 7.9–11.3 N·m (70–100 in-lbs).
9. | Inspect the grommets to make sure that they have not shifted or popped out of the oil cooler frame.
NOTICE Oil level cannot be accurately measured on a cold engine. For pre-ride inspection, with motorcycle leaning on jiffy stand on level ground, oil should register on dipstick between arrows when engine is cold. Do not add oil to bring the level to the FULL mark on a COLD engine. (00185a)
10. | Install new oil filter.
11. | Perform an oil level cold check. NOTE Add only enough oil to bring the level between the two arrows on the dipstick. |
1. | Start engine. Examine all hose connections for leaks. If there is no leakage, allow engine to warm up. NOTE Position the clamps to avoid interference with oil filter installation. Check that hose routing is clear of the oil filter and sharp edges. The hoses must be free of bends or kinks that could obstruct oil flow.
2. | Verify that temperature of oil cooler increases when engine reaches normal operating temperatures. If the oil cooler remains cool after engine has warmed up, there may be an oil obstruction. Turn off engine, allow engine to cool and check system for source of obstruction.
3. | Verify that all hose clamps are tightened to 0.9 N·m (8 in-lbs).
4. | Fill oil to FILL level on dipstick. |
