This kit is a direct replacement for the original equipment rear brake pads on 2014-later XL Sportster models. See the parts catalog for fitment.

Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. WARNING
Contact with DOT 4 brake fluid can have serious health effects. Failure to wear proper skin and eye protection could result in death or serious injury.
  • If inhaled: Keep calm, remove to fresh air, seek medical attention.
  • If on skin: Remove contaminated clothing. Rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15-20 minutes. If irritation develops, seek medical attention.
  • If in eyes: Wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eye lids held open. If irritation develops, seek medical attention.
  • If swallowed: Rinse mouth and then drink plenty of water. Do not induce vomiting. Contact Poison Control. Immediate medical attention required.

NOTICE
DOT 4 brake fluid will damage painted and body panel surfaces it comes in contact with. Always use caution and protect surfaces from spills whenever brake work is performed. Failure to comply can result in cosmetic damage. (00239c)
REMOVAL
NOTE
  • If Dot 4 brake fluid contacts painted surfaces, IMMEDIATELY flush area with clear water. As piston is pushed back into caliper, fluid level can rise higher than max fill level. If necessary, remove fluid.
  1. Position motorcycle to level master cylinder reservoir.
  2. Place container under reservoir to catch fluid overflow.
  3. Remove reservoir cover.
  1. Remove caliper.
    1. Remove brake line P-clamp from rear fork.
    2. Loosen, but do not remove pad pin.
    3. Remove caliper mounting bolts.
    4. Remove caliper from bracket.
  1. Remove old pads.
    1. Support caliper.
    2. To press pistons into their bores, press pads apart.
    3. Pull pad in part way until wheel side pad is free.
    4. Pull pin until outside pad is free.
    5. Remove pads and pad spring.
  1. Inspect pin for grooving and wear.
    1. Measure pin for grooving in an unworn area.
    2. Measure pin in area of any grooving or wear.
    3. If wear exceeds 0.28 mm (0.011 in) replace pin.
INSTALLATION
NOTE
Verify that pad spring is installed before installing new pads.
  1. Install new pads.
    1. Hold pad spring (1).
    2. Hold brake pads (2) in position.
    3. Press pad pin (3) through outside caliper, outside pad and spring.
    4. While compressing pads and spring, press pad pin over center of pad spring through wheel side pad.
    5. While pressing down on spring center, align pin with wheel side caliper.
    6. Partially thread in pad pin.
1. Install caliper.
a. Fit caliper over brake disc.
b. Install mounting bolts. Tighten to 38–51.5 N·m (23–38 ft-lbs).
c. Tighten pad pin to 14.8–19.5 N·m (131–173 in-lbs).
d. Install brake line P-clamp. Tighten to 3.4–4.5 N·m (30–40 in-lbs).
2. Check fluid level in brake reservoir. Level must be between low-level mark and max fill level.
3. Install master cylinder reservoir cover and screws. Tighten to 1–2 N·m (9–17 in-lbs).
NOTE
Avoid making hard stops for first 160 km (100 mi) to allow new pads to become conditioned to brake discs.
4. Test brakes. Turn ignition switch ON. Check operation of rear lamps. Test ride motorcycle at low speed. See bleeding procedure if brakes feel spongy. Refer to service manual.
