Models
For model fitment information, see the P&A retail catalog or the Parts and Accessories section of www.harley-davidson.com (English only).
Installation Requirements
2005-earlier models require the separate purchase of two intake flanges (Part No. 26993-06). 2006-later models reuse stock intake flanges.
Each head requires one 12 mm spark plug. We recommend Screamin' Eagle Performance Spark Plugs (see Screamin' Eagle Pro catalog).
On all models, a Top End Overhaul Gasket Kit is required .
Refer to pushrod and cam charts in the Screamin' Eagle Pro catalog for performance pushrods that could be required for your application.
All of the above items must be purchased separately. They are available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.
WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet refers to service manual information. A service manual for your year/model motorcycle is required for this installation. One is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.
Kit Contents
See Figure 2 and Table 1.
NOTE
This kit is intended for High Performance or Racing applications only. It is not legal for sale or use on pollution controlled motor vehicles. This kit could reduce or void the limited vehicle warranty. Engine-related performance parts are intended FOR THE EXPERIENCED RIDER ONLY.
NOTICE
Do not exceed the maximum safe RPM specified below under any conditions. Exceeding the maximum safe engine RPM can result in equipment damage. (00248a)
REMOVAL
Prepare for Service
1. Position motorcycle on a suitable lift.
NOTE
  • 2007- later vehicles WITH security siren: With security fob present, turn ignition switch ON. See the service manual. Disarm security system. Turn ignition switch OFF. IMMEDIATELY remove the main fuse.
  • 1999-2006 vehicles WITH security siren: Disarm the siren with the key fob or security code. See the service manual to remove the main fuse.
  • Vehicles WITHOUT security siren: See the service manual. Remove main fuse.
WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove main fuse before proceeding. (00251b)
2. Remove seat. See the service manual.
3. Refer to service manual to remove main fuse.
WARNING
When servicing the fuel system, do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks in the vicinity. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00330a)
4. Remove fuel tank. See the service manual.
Remove Engine Components
1. See the service manual to perform the following steps:
a. Remove air cleaner assembly.
b. Remove exhaust system.
c. Remove cylinder heads from engine.
NOTE
The valve springs in these cylinder head assemblies work with cams with up to 14.859 mm (0.585 in) lift, and up to 7000 rpm.
It is important to check valve-to-piston clearance as described in the following steps. We recommend that a Harley-Davidson dealer inspect the clearance.
Valves must be properly adjusted to zero valve lash when claying pistons.
2. Apply a 3.2 mm (⅛ in) thick layer of clay to the crowns of both pistons (in the areas where valves meet pistons).
3. Install the new cylinder heads from this kit per service manual procedures. Use the new gaskets from the Top End Overhaul Gasket Kit (purchased separately). Assemble heads and valve train. Tighten the internal-threaded cylinder screws to torque specifications listed in service manual.
4. Hand-rotate engine through two complete revolutions.
5. Remove heads. Measure the clay at its thinnest point.
NOTE
  • Clay must measure 2.03 mm (0.080 in) at the thinnest point. If this measurement does not meet the minimum thickness, increase the depth of the valve notches. Notch depth must not exceed 3.43 mm (0.135 in).
NOTE
The valve springs on the new cylinder heads have an installed spring height of 46.99 mm (1.850 in), which equals 87.86 kg (193.7 lb) of seat pressure.
  • Increase seat pressure by placing shims [Part No. 18224-98 0.381 mm (0.015 in) or Part No. 18225-98 0.762 mm (0.030 in) under the lower spring collars. Every 0.381 mm (0.015 in) reduction in spring height equals 1.7 kg (3.8 lb) more seat pressure. Shim to the desired seat pressure by placing shims under the lower collar. Maintain a minimum of 17.78 mm (0.70 in) travel to coil bind.
  • Decrease seat pressure by machining the surface of the cylinder heads in the area under the lower spring collar. Every 0.381 mm (0.015 in) increase in spring height equals 1.7 kg (3.8 lb) less seat pressure. Machine to the desired seat pressure by machining the spring pockets in the cylinder heads. Maintain a minimum of 17.78 mm (0.70 in) travel to coil bind.
For constant operation at extreme RPMs, check all four valve springs for matching installed heights.
1Upper collar
2Lower collar (with valve guide seal)
3Installed spring height 1.850 in. (46.99 mm); spring pressure 193.7 lbs (87.86 kg)
4Free travel should be at least 0.080 in. (2.03 mm) greater than maximum valve lift.
Figure 1. Valve Spring Travel
6. To change installed valve spring height (seat pressure):
a. Compress each valve spring in turn. Remove valve collar retainers, upper collars, springs, valve seals and lower collars on all four valves.
b. See Figure 1. Use shims or machine cylinder heads as required to obtain desired seat pressure (see preceding bullet points). Install lower valve spring collars and valve springs (do not install valve seals now), upper collars and collar keys. Check installed spring heights.
c. If spring heights do not match, repeat Steps a and b as necessary to reach the desired installed spring height (without valve seals installed).
d. When all spring heights match, remove valve collar retainers, upper collars, springs and lower collars. Install using new lower collars/valve guide seals (Part No. 18016-03, purchased separately). Assemble the cylinder heads.
NOTE
The automatic compression release plug can be removed for installation of a Screamin' Eagle Automatic Compression Release Kit (Part No. 28861-07A, available separately).
If mechanical compression release is desired, a Screamin' Eagle Compression Release Kit (Part No. 32076-04) is available. The mechanical compression release can be machined using the Screamin' Eagle Mechanical Compression Release Fixture (Part No. 94638-08).
INSTALLATION
Install Engine Components
  1. See the service manual to perform the following steps:
    1. Install cylinder heads to engine.
    2. Install exhaust system.
    3. Install air cleaner assembly.
    4. Install fuel tank.
Final Assembly
1. Install main fuse. See the service manual.
WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
2. Install seat per the service manual.
NOTICE
You must recalibrate the ECM when installing this kit. Failure to properly recalibrate the ECM can result in severe engine damage. (00399b)
3. Download the new ECM calibration using EFI Race Tuner Kit. Refer to the Screamin' Eagle Pro Racing Parts catalog or contact a Harley-Davidson dealer.
4. Start and run engine. Repeat several times to verify proper operation.
Operation
  1. Refer to BREAK-IN RIDING RULES in the owner's manual for engine break-in instructions.
