1. | Position motorcycle on a suitable lift. NOTE
| |
![]() To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove main fuse before proceeding. (00251b)
2. | Remove seat. See the service manual.
3. | Refer to service manual to remove main fuse.
![]() When servicing the fuel system, do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks in the vicinity. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00330a)
4. | Remove fuel tank. See the service manual. |
1. | See the service manual to perform the following steps: a. Remove air cleaner assembly. b. Remove exhaust system. c. Remove cylinder heads from engine. NOTE The valve springs in these cylinder head assemblies work with cams with up to 14.859 mm (0.585 in) lift, and up to 7000 rpm. It is important to check valve-to-piston clearance as described in the following steps. We recommend that a Harley-Davidson dealer inspect the clearance. Valves must be properly adjusted to zero valve lash when claying pistons.
2. | Apply a 3.2 mm (⅛ in) thick layer of clay to the crowns of both pistons (in the areas where valves meet pistons).
3. | Install the new cylinder heads from this kit per service manual procedures. Use the new gaskets from the Top End Overhaul Gasket Kit (purchased separately). Assemble heads and valve train. Tighten the internal-threaded cylinder screws to torque specifications listed in service manual.
4. | Hand-rotate engine through two complete revolutions.
5. | Remove heads. Measure the clay at its thinnest point. NOTE
NOTE The valve springs on the new cylinder heads have an installed spring height of 46.99 mm (1.850 in), which equals 87.86 kg (193.7 lb) of seat pressure.
For constant operation at extreme RPMs, check all four valve springs for matching installed heights. |
Figure 1. Valve Spring Travel
6. | To change installed valve spring height (seat pressure): a. Compress each valve spring in turn. Remove valve collar retainers, upper collars, springs, valve seals and lower collars on all four valves. b. See Figure 1. Use shims or machine cylinder heads as required to obtain desired seat pressure (see preceding bullet points). Install lower valve spring collars and valve springs (do not install valve seals now), upper collars and collar keys. Check installed spring heights. c. If spring heights do not match, repeat Steps a and b as necessary to reach the desired installed spring height (without valve seals installed). d. When all spring heights match, remove valve collar retainers, upper collars, springs and lower collars. Install using new lower collars/valve guide seals (Part No. 18016-03, purchased separately). Assemble the cylinder heads. |
1. | Install main fuse. See the service manual.
![]() After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
2. | Install seat per the service manual.
NOTICE You must recalibrate the ECM when installing this kit. Failure to properly recalibrate the ECM can result in severe engine damage. (00399b)
3. | Download the new ECM calibration using EFI Race Tuner Kit. Refer to the Screamin' Eagle Pro Racing Parts catalog or contact a Harley-Davidson dealer.
4. | Start and run engine. Repeat several times to verify proper operation. |
