This kit fits 2007-2010 FX Softail models.
Installation Requirements
Two steel/rubber washers (Part No. 41731-01) and a cotter pin (Part No. 515) are needed for proper installation of this kit.
Loctite® 243 Medium Strength Threadlocker and Sealant - Blue (Part No. 99642-97) and fresh, uncontaminated DOT 4 hydraulic brake fluid from a sealed container are also needed.

Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. This instruction sheet refers to service manual information. A service manual for your year/model motorcycle is required for this installation. One is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.

PREPARATION
WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove main fuse before proceeding. (00251b)
NOTE
  • WITH security siren: With security fob present, turn ignition switch ON. See the service manual. Disarm security system. Turn ignition switch OFF. IMMEDIATELY remove the main fuse.
  • WITHOUT security siren: See the service manual. Remove main fuse.
REMOVAL
NOTE
The brake system on this vehicle uses DOT 4 BRAKE FLUID. Do not mix grades of brake fluid as they are not compatible.
WARNING
Contact with DOT 4 brake fluid can have serious health effects. Failure to wear proper skin and eye protection could result in death or serious injury.
  • If inhaled: Keep calm, remove to fresh air, seek medical attention.
  • If on skin: Remove contaminated clothing. Rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15-20 minutes. If irritation develops, seek medical attention.
  • If in eyes: Wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eye lids held open. If irritation develops, seek medical attention.
  • If swallowed: Rinse mouth and then drink plenty of water. Do not induce vomiting. Contact Poison Control. Immediate medical attention required.

NOTICE
DOT 4 brake fluid will damage painted and body panel surfaces it comes in contact with. Always use caution and protect surfaces from spills whenever brake work is performed. Failure to comply can result in cosmetic damage. (00239c)
NOTE
If DOT 4 brake fluid contacts painted surfaces, IMMEDIATELY flush area with clear water.
Cover nearby motorcycle surfaces with an H-D Service Cover or polyethylene protective sheet to help protect against damage to the finish caused by spillage or splash of DOT 4 brake fluid.
  1. See Figure 1. Remove banjo bolt (1) and two steel/rubber washers (2) to disconnect brake line from master cylinder. Discard washers.
  2. Remove nut (4) to free assembly from mounting bracket.
  3. See Figure 2. Remove cotter pin (4) and washer (5) from clevis pin (6). Disengage master cylinder assembly (2) from brake pedal (1).
  4. Remove the screw and washer from the end of the brake pedal pivot shaft. Slide the brake pedal off the shaft.
  5. NOTE
    Rear brake pedal contains greaseless bushings and O-rings. Replace if worn.
  6. Remove the footpeg from the brake pedal mounting bracket. Save the footpeg and fasteners for installation.
  7. Remove the brake pedal mounting bracket from the vehicle and discard. Save the three screws for installation.

INSTALLATION
1. See Figure 4. Get the new brake pedal mounting bracket (2) and master cylinder retention clip (3) from the kit. Get the three screws removed earlier.
2. Position the bracket to the vehicle frame, aligning the three holes. Loosely assemble the bracket to the vehicle with the two bottom screws. DO NOT fully tighten now.
3. See Figure 2. Install master cylinder assembly (2) clevis onto the brake pedal (1) bellcrank. Insert clevis pin (6) through clevis and bellcrank. Install washer (5) onto clevis pin. Fasten with new cotter pin (4).
4. See Figure 1. Fit collar on master cylinder cartridge body into slot of brake pedal mounting bracket. Apply a few drops of Loctite 243 - Blue to the clean threads of nut (4). Install nut on cartridge body. Tighten to 40.7–54.2 N·m (30–40 ft-lbs).
5. Lubricate new steel/rubber washers (2) with DOT 4 brake fluid. Position a washer on each side of brake line (3). Insert the banjo bolt (1) through washers and fitting. Tighten to 23.1–29.9 N·m (17–22 ft-lbs).
6. See Figure 3. Get the master cylinder retention clip (2) from the kit, and the remaining screw (1) removed earlier.

7. Install retention clip into position. Verify that tab on clip is in alignment hole (3). Install screw. Alternately tighten three brake lever mounting bracket screws to 39.4–46.1 N·m (29–34 ft-lbs).
WARNING
When any hydraulic brake component, line or connection is loosened or replaced on an ABS motorcycle, Digital Technician II must be used during the brake bleeding procedure to verify all air is removed from the system. Failure to properly bleed the brake system could adversely affect braking, which could result in death or serious injury. (00585c)
8. Bleed rear brake system per service manual instructions.
NOTE
Sight glass appears dark if fluid is present. As the fluid level drops, the glass lightens up to indicate this condition to the rider.
