Installation Requirements
Loctite® 243 (Blue) Threadlocker and Sealant (Part No. 99642-97) is required for proper installation of this kit.
WARNINGRider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet references service manual information. A service manual for your model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.
PREPARE
| 1. | Remove seat. See Service Manual. | |
| 2. | Remove rear fender. See Service Manual. | |
| 3. | Place rear fender on a suitable surface. |
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
WARNINGImproper loading of cargo or installation of accessories can affect motorcycle stability and handling, which could result in death or serious injury. (00121a)
Use the following guidelines when equipping a motorcycle or carrying passengers and cargo.
- Keep cargo weight concentrated close to the motorcycle and as low as possible to minimize the change in the motorcycle's center of gravity. Distribute weight evenly and do not load bulky items too far behind the rider or add weight to the handlebars or front forks.
- Be sure cargo is secure and will not shift while riding. Periodically recheck load.
| 1. | See Figure 1 From underneath, remove two RH hex head bracket screws (2) and washers (3). Save hardware for installation. | |
| 2. | From above, remove two rear fender support bracket bolts and rear fender bracket supports. Discard original bracket support. | |
| 3. | Position new rear fender bracket support and install the original hardware hex head screws (2) and washer (3) saved from removal. Tighten. Torque: 5.3–6.5 N·m (47–58 in-lbs) | |
| 4. | See Figure 2 Position tail rack bungee bar (5) and with new bolts (4), install bungee bars. | |
| 5. | NOTE Hand tighten all new bolts before torquing. Torque: 20–24 N·m (15–18 ft-lbs) | |
| 6. | Repeat steps 1-5 on the LH side. | |
| 7. | Install rear fender. See Service Manual. | |
| 8. | Place stand under vehicle for support. | |
| 9. | Remove rear upper shock bolt and washer. Discard washer. | |
| 10. | Clean fastener threads. To attain proper clamp load, always clean fastener threads and threaded holes prior to assembly. NOTE Never use a thread-cutting tap or die to clean threads. a. Clean all threadlocking material from fastener threads and threaded holes. b. Use a wire brush or thread-chasing die to clean fastener threads. c. Use a thread chaser to clean threaded holes. d. Use PJ1 cleaner or equivalent to remove all traces of oil and contaminants from threads. e. Clear all threaded holes with low-pressure compressed air. f. Always verify cleanliness of blind holes before assembly. Tightening a screw with dirt, water or oil int he hole can cause castings to crack or break. | |
| 11. | See Figure 3 Apply Loctite to original OE bolt. Install new washer clip and original bolt. Tighten. Torque: 61–68 N·m (45–50 ft-lbs) | |
| 12. | Repeat on opposite side. | |
| 13. | See Figure 4 Install bungee bar license reflector relocation kit. Tighten. Torque: 1.1–1.7 N·m (10–15 in-lbs) | |
| 14. | Install seat. After installing seat, pull up on the seat to verify that it is secure. See Service Manual. |
NOTE
Make sure that the tail light is not covered when securing bags on the bungee bar and tail bag.
