ELECTRICAL OVERLOAD
NOTICE
It is possible to overload the vehicle's charging system by adding too many electrical accessories. If the combined electrical accessories operating at any one time consume more electrical current than the vehicle's charging system can produce, the electrical consumption can discharge the battery and cause damage to the vehicle's electrical system. (00211d)
WARNING
When installing any electrical accessory, be certain not to exceed the maximum amperage rating of the fuse or circuit breaker protecting the affected circuit being modified. Exceeding the maximum amperage can lead to electrical failures, which could result in death or serious injury. (00310a)
The speakers installed with this kit require up to 4 amps more current from the electrical system.

Speaker Installation
NOTE
Test-fit to determine the desired location for the speaker pods on the handlebar.
  • See Figure 5. Mount the speakers as shown. Position the speaker clamps (4) so the speakers are inside the handlebar. Position the speakers symmetrically to the left and right of the handlebar clamp, and be placed low and as close to the center as possible.
  • See Figure 7. The speaker pod (2) with five electrical connectors mounts on the brake side of the handlebar. The speaker pod (1) with one electrical connector (1) mounts on the clutch side.
  • If the vehicle is normally equipped with a windshield, position the speakers symmetrically to the left and right of the handlebar clamp, and be placed low and as close to the center as possible. NOTE: For best sound quality, an installed windshield is recommended.
  • Check to make sure that speaker and clamp positioning does not interfere with steering function, control operation or visibility of instruments.
1In board speaker mounting, allowed
2In board speaker mounting, allowed
3Out board speaker mounting, PROHIBITED
Figure 5. Speaker Location on Handlebar
If mounting to 31.8 mm (1 1/4 in) diameter handlebars, the spacers (12) can be discarded.
NOTE
Insert the spacers inside the clamps (14 and 11) for vehicles with 25.4 mm (1.0 in) diameter handlebars. Verify the spacers seat in the recesses inside the clamps.
1. See Figure 7. Place speakers in locations determined earlier. Some models may require relocating of the clutch cable. Place a few drops of blue Loctite on all clamp screws (10 and 13). Secure speakers to handlebar using clamps (14 and 11) and screws (10). Tighten screw (10) to 4.5-6.8 Nm (40-60 in-lbs). Tighten screw (13) to 20-27 Nm (180-240 in-lbs).
Routing and Connections
  1. Route the wires and connectors that join the two speakers together. Align the arrows on the connectors. Secure together using the threaded collar.
  2. Connect the hand control to the mating connector on the right side speaker. Align the arrows on the connectors. Secure together using the threaded collar.
  3. Route the remaining wires from the center of the handlebars near the steer head.
    1. XL, Dyna, 2017 and earlier Softail: Run the 3-wire power wires down the vehicle frame backbone following the vehicle main harness.
    2. Road King: Remove the cover from the wire troth and route wires inside it. Reinstall cover.
    3. 2018+ Softail: Remove the wire grommet from the LH side of the frame near the steer head. Remove the wire caddy from the bottom of the frame. Follow the vehicle main harness routing through the frame backbone exiting near the end of the tank. Make the electrical connections to the specific electrical connection (varies by model and year) using butt splices from that kit.
    4. 2018 Softail: Be sure the wiring has sufficient clearance to the vehicle mono-shock. Bundle excess wiring under the RH side cover. Additional cable straps and adhesive cable anchors are included in the 69201599A kit in case harness re-routing is required.
  4. NOTE
If multiple accessories are installed to the electrical connection kit it may be necessary to re-route 69201599A wires over to the vehicle RH side and bundle under that side cover. If this is done, make sure the harness follows the main harness under the shock (again checking for clearance to the shock).
  5. If a rear speaker system has been installed connect it to the front speaker system now.
  6. If the 1/8 in (3.5 mm) auxiliary connector IS going to used, attach jumper. Route to desired location (see catalog for: magnetic tank pouch or phone mount). Secure in such a manner that does not interfere with dynamic movement or steering. If audio jack is used or disconnected frequently, place it in an accessible location. If the 1/8 in (3.5 mm) auxiliary connector is not going to used stow it now.
  7. Secure wires with cable straps.
Completion
1. For Road King models only: See the service manual and assemble the left and right nacelle halves. Assemble the handlebar cover to the vehicle.
2. ALL models: See the service manual, Install fuel tank.
3. Install the windshield (if equipped) to the vehicle per the instructions in the service manual or accessory kit. Make sure to protect the windshield and speaker pods from scratches during installation.
WARNING
Be sure that steering is smooth and free without interference. Interference with steering could result in loss of vehicle control and death or serious injury. (00371a)
4. Make sure the speaker pods do not interfere with steering function, controls operation or visibility of instruments.
NOTE
Verify that the ignition switch is in the OFF position before installing the main fuse or attaching the battery cable.
5. Models with main fuse: See the service manual. Install main fuse. Models with main circuit breaker:
a. ALL models except XL Sportster: See the service manual and attach the negative battery cable. Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or corrosion retardant material to battery terminals.
