Installation Requirements
WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00308b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet references service manual information. A service manual for the year and model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from:
  • Separate purchase of Rider Backrest Mounting Kit (Part No. 52589-09B) is required.
PREPARE
1. Install rider backrest mounting kit. Refer to Installation Requirements.
INSTALL
1. On rider backrest, compress backrest rods and spring.
2. Insert rods into rider backrest mounting bracket.
a. Select one of three holes in mounting bracket which sets height of backrest pad.
ADJUSTMENT
1. Adjust fore or aft position of backrest pad.
a. Use 3/16 inch hex wrench to adjust set screw that is accessible through eyelet opening on rear of pad.
b. DO NOT remove set screw because it is difficult to install.
