1. | Refer to POWER DISCONNECT in the owner's manual and follow the instructions to prevent the security module from actuating the siren.
WARNING To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. (00048a)
2. | Remove the seat following the instructions in the owner's manual and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. Save all seat hardware for installation. |
1. | Remove the right side saddlebag per the instructions in the owner's manual. Gently pull the side cover from the frame downtubes.
2. | Locate the siren connector. It is covered by a dust cap and is at the end of an unconnected 254 mm (10 in) long harness leg. For 1997 through 2000 models: See Figure 1. The siren harness (part of the security system harness) originates near the frame rail above the battery box. Free the connector from the cable strap or T-stud. For 2001 models: See Figure 2. The siren harness originates near the front of the battery box. Clip the cable strap and unfold the siren connector [142]. | Figure 1. Siren Connector (1997 Through 2000 Models) Figure 2. 3. | On carbureted models, remove and save the nut from the right-side stud on the battery box. Note that the left-side stud does not have a nut. A nut is included in this kit for use when installing the siren bracket. On fuel injected (EFI) models, remove (pull) and save the rubber fuse holder from the existing bracket. See Figure 4. Locate the Data Link connector (1) and unclip it from its T-stud. Remove and save the nuts from the two studs on the battery box. |

4. | See Figure 3. Place the siren bracket (4) onto the studs, and install the nuts (3) to secure the bracket. Tighten the nuts to 6.8–13.6 N·m (5–10 ft-lbs).
5. | Place the siren in the cradle formed by the siren bracket tabs with the connector and antenna (6) pointing up and the sounder disc (5) facing out. Loop the cable strap (2) from the kit around the neck of the connector, aligning it with the notches in the vertical tab of the siren bracket. See Figure 5 for the location of the vertical tab notches. Cinch the cable strap tight to bind the siren to the bracket.
6. | Take the protective cap off of the connector on the security siren. Remove the dust cap from the siren harness connector. Connect the siren harness to the siren (see Figure 4 ). |

7. | On fuel injected (EFI) models only, clip the Data Link connector to the T-connector on the siren bracket. Get the rubber fuse holder removed earlier and install it to the hole in the corner of the bracket.
8. | Clean the outboard surface of the frame tube above the siren with a mixture of 50 to 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30 to 50% water. Allow to dry thoroughly.
9. | See Figure 5. Peel the paper backing from the adhesive-backed hook fastener (5) and attach the fastener to the frame in the cleaned area.
10. | Route the siren antenna wire down the center of the installed fastener half, and straighten the antenna along the length of the fastener. NOTE In order for the antenna to work properly, none of the small diameter portion should touch the metal parts of the vehicle.
11. | Install the plain-backed loop fastener (6) onto the hook fastener installed on the frame, capturing the antenna wire to hold it firmly in place.
12. | Align the barbed studs on the side cover with the grommets in the frame and push side cover firmly into place.
13. | Install the right side saddlebag per the instructions in the owner's manual. NOTE Verify that the ignition key switch is in the OFF position before installing the main fuse or attaching the battery cables.
14. | Apply a light coat of Harley-Davidson electrical contact lubricant (H-D Part No. 99861-02), petroleum jelly or corrosion retardant material to the negative battery terminal. Refer to the owner's manual and follow the instructions to attach the negative battery cable.
WARNING After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
15. | Refer to the owner's manual, and follow instructions to install the seat. |
