Installation Requirements
WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet references service manual information. A service manual for the year and model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from:
PREPARE
1. Remove main fuse. See service manual.
REMOVE
NOTE
Use hair dryer on low heat to loosen adhesive.
1. Remove and discard Original Equipment (OE) air cleaner cover insert (1) from air cleaner cover (B).
a. Use plastic pry tool or fishing line.
2. Kits 29400494 and 29400499: Remove any residual adhesive on the cover with mineral spirits.
3. Kits 29400494 and 29400495: Remove OE air cleaner cover screw (A) and air cleaner cover (B).
4. Kit 29400494: Remove OE air filter spacer (C) from OE air filter (2). Retain spacer.
5. Kits 29400495 and 29400499: Remove OE air filter (2) and screws (D).
6. Remove air filter gasket (E) from OE air filter and retain.
INSTALL
NOTE
When servicing the air cleaner, apply LOCTITE 243 MEDIUM STRENGTH THREADLOCKER AND SEALANT (BLUE) (99642-97) on threads of fasteners.
1. Kit 29400494: Install OE air filter spacer (C) into new K&N® air filter (2).
2. Kits 29400495 and 29400499: Install OE air filter gasket (E) onto K&N® filter (7).
3. Install new K&N® air filter into OE air cleaner using screws (D).
NOTE
Air filter is PRE-OILED and ready to install.
4. Kits 29400494 and 29400499: Install air cleaner cover insert (1) and OE air cleaner cover (B).
NOTE
Allow at least 24 hours after applying the insert before exposing the area to vigorous washing, strong water spray or extreme weather. The adhesive bond will increase to maximum strength after about 72 hours at normal room temperatures.
a. Clean insert area on air cleaner cover with a mixture of 50-70% isopropyl alcohol and 30-50% distilled water.
b. Allow to dry thoroughly.
c. Remove adhesive backing from air cleaner cover insert.
d. Position insert over OE air cleaner cover without touching adhesive on cover surface.
e. Align insert with recess in air cleaner cover.
5. Press air cleaner cover insert firmly against the cover all around.
a. Hold pressure for 30 seconds.
b. After releasing pressure, avoid direct contact with the insert for about 20 minutes.
6. Kits 29400494 and 29400495: Install OE air cleaner cover (B) using OE screw (A).
NOTE
Kit 29400495: The air cleaner cover insert in this kit utilizes 3M™ Dual Lock™ Reclosable tape. The tape can be separated and pressed back together for service access to the air cleaner cover screw.
COMPLETE
1. Install main fuse. See service manual.
MAINTENANCE
Air Filter Element
1. Inspect air filter element.
a. Inspect every 8,000 km (5,000 mi), or more often under dusty conditions.
NOTE
  • The use of cleaning, drying or oiling methods or products other than those shown, damages the filter and can void the manufacturer's warranty.
  • K&N® Air Filter Cleaner is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer, either a 0.95 L (1 qt) sprayer bottle (Part No. 99883-88T) or as a 0.35 L (12 fl oz) sprayer bottle as part of the Filter Care Service Kit (Part No. 99850-92T).
  • K&N® Air Filter Oil is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer, either alone 347 g (12.24 oz) aerosol can (Part No. 99882-88T) or as a 184 g (6.5 oz) aerosol can as part of the Filter Care Service Kit.
  • DO NOT OVER-OIL THE AIR FILTER. Over-oiling can interfere with the proper performance of the engine and/or certain engine components. If oil is still draining or dripping from the filter media 20 minutes after oiling, clean and oil the filter element again.
2. To clean element:
a. Remove air filter element by removing screws securing filter cover.
b. Tap element to dislodge any loose dirt. Gently brush with a soft bristle brush.
c. Spray air filter cleaner liberally onto cotton filter media and let soak for 10 minutes, roll or soak cotton filter media in a shallow pan of air cleaner. Remove immediately and let soak for 10 minutes.
d. After rinsing, shake off all excess water, and let filter media air dry. DO NOT use compressed air or heat gun to speed drying.
e. After filter media is completely dry, carefully use a squeeze bottle to deposit air filter oil along each pleat or spray oil along each pleat, once only, holding spray nozzle away from media approximately 76 mm (3 in).
f. Allow oil to absorb into filter media for 20 minutes before proceeding. After 20 minutes, inspect filter media. Carefully apply oil to any remaining visible white spots on the filter media. Allow oil to absorb.
