WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet references Service Manual information. A Service Manual for your model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from a Harley-Davidson Dealer.

INSTALLATION
WARNING
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)
1. Refer to the Service Manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and disconnect the battery cables, negative (-) cable first. Retain all seat mounting hardware.
2. Remove and retain the two screws holding the tail lamp lens to the base.
NOTE
For models with bobtail fender, tail lamp and circuit board are reversed top to bottom from what is shown in Figure 1. On some versions, turn signal connectors may also be reversed, left to right. Note connector position before disconnecting.
3. See Figure 1. Depress the locking tab and disconnect the 4-pin multi-lock tail lamp connector (1) from the circuit board. Set the lens and bulb assembly aside.
4. Depress the locking tabs (4) and disconnect the two 2-pin multi-lock turn signal connectors (2) and (3) from the circuit board.
NOTE
The wires and terminals must be removed from the original equipment 2-pin turn signal connectors so the wires will fit through the turn signal standoff. Before removing turn signal wires, carefully note wire position in each connector, referring to the wiring diagram in the Service Manual. Note also the routing of the wiring through the tail lamp base and under the fender. In particular, pay close attention to the locations of cable straps which must be replaced.

5. Refer to the AMP MULTILOCK ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS section in the Service Manual to remove the wires and terminals from the turn signal connectors.
6. For Dyna models, and from under the fender, remove the fastener retaining each turn signal lamp and standoff to the fender. Retain the lamps and fasteners. The standoff can be discarded.
NOTE
Some Softail models have backing brackets installed on the inside of the fender that several of the strut bolts thread into. When strut bolts are removed, the backing brackets may fall loose on the inside of the fender. Retain these items for future installation.

8. See Figure 4. Gently pull wiring (3) out through fender and spacer (6). Remove original bolt (1) and washer (2) from strut (5). Remove turn signal (4) and original standoff (7) from strut. Carefully pull signal wire out through standoff. Discard original equipment standoff (7), bolt (1) and washer (2).
9. See Figure 3. Obtain a new turn signal standoff (1) from the kit (both are identical)(Note orientation). Feed the wires from one turn signal lamp into the end of the standoff, through the triangular opening. DO NOT feed the wires through the round mounting hole in the standoff.
10. For Dyna models, feed the turn signal wires through the wiring hole in the fender support and fender. Continue pulling the wires through the hole until the turn signal lamp and stand-off are at the fender support. Be careful that the wires are not twisted or damaged as the lamp and stand-off are assembled.
11. See Service Parts Illustration. For Softail model's, feed turn signal wire through wire hole in support. Mount turn signal and standoff to strut using new mounting bolt (3) from kit. DO NOT use a flat washer under bolt head. See Figure 4. Feed the turn signal wire through spacer (6) and the wire hole in the fender. Mount the strut onto the fender. See Figure 2. Align the strut and install bolts (1). Tighten bolts to 21-27 ft-lbs (28.3-36.6 Nm).
12. See Service Parts illustration. For Dyna model's, and from the underside, insert the turn signal fastener (2) through the mounting hole in the fender, through the round mounting hole in the turn signal support and into the threaded hole in the turn signal lamp. Verify that the turn signal points straight behind.
13. Repeat Steps 2 through 11 for the opposite side.
14. Route the turn signal wires to the tail lamp base, following the same paths originally taken by the turn signal wiring.
15. Ensure that the wires are secured under the fender by re-routing wires through cable straps. No wires should be allowed to hang loose.
16. Obtain the tail lamp lens and bulb assembly previously removed.
17. See Service Parts Illustration. Insert the wires and terminals from the turn signal lamps back into the connectors (B). See Figure 1. Reconnect the 2-pin multi-lock turn signal connectors (2) and (3) to the circuit board.
18. Re-connect the 4-pin multi-lock tail lamp connector (1) to the circuit board. Re-assemble the tail lamp lens to the base with the two screws previously removed.
WARNING
Connect positive (+) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00068a)
19. Refer to the Service Manual and follow the instructions given to re-attach the battery cables, positive (+) cable first.
WARNING
Be sure that all lights and switches operate properly before operating motorcycle. Low visibility of rider can result in death or serious injury. (00316a)
20. Turn the ignition on, and check the turn signal lights and motorcycle lamps for proper operation.
WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
21. Refer to the Service Manual, and follow instructions to install the seat.
