1. | Position motorcycle on a suitable lift.
2. | Remove seat. | |
3. | NOTE If vehicle is equipped with Harley-Davidson Smart Security System, see owner's manual for instructions to disarm the system.
WARNING When servicing the fuel system, do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks in the vicinity. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00330a)
4. | Remove fuel tank. | |
5. | Remove air cleaner assembly.
6. | Remove induction module.
7. | Remove exhaust system. |
1. | Remove cylinder heads from engine. Refer to appropriate ENGINE sections in service manual.
2. | NOTE
a. Apply a 1/8 in (3.2 mm) thick layer of clay to the crowns of both pistons in the areas where the valves meet the pistons. b. Install the new cylinder heads from this kit per the service manual procedures, using the Original Equipment (OE) head gaskets and cylinder head flange nuts. Tighten the cylinder head flange nuts to the torque specifications listed in the Service Manual c. Tighten cylinder head flange nuts to torque specifications listed in steps d-h. d. Apply engine oil to cylinder head nut flange. Tighten. Torque: 27.1–40.6 N·m (20–30 ft-lbs) e. Loosen one full turn. Torque: -360° f. Tighten nut. Torque: 12.2–14.9 N·m (9–11 ft-lbs) g. Tighten nut. Torque: 24.2–27.1 N·m (18–20 ft-lbs) h. Tighten to final torque. Torque: 90° i. Assemble the heads and valve train. j. Turn the engine (by hand) through two complete revolutions. k. Remove the heads and measure the clay at its thinnest point. Clay must measure 0.080 in (2.03 mm) or more at the thinnest point. If this measurement does not meet the minimum thickness, the depth of the valve notches must be increased; however, the depth of the notches must not exceed 0.135 in (3.43 mm).
3. | NOTE The valve springs on the new cylinder heads have an installed spring height of 1.535 in (38.99 mm), which equals 68.8 lbs (31.21 kg) of seat pressure. a. Compress valve springs and remove valve keepers, upper collars, springs, and valve stem seals on all four valves of each cylinder. b. See Figure 1. Use shims or machine the cylinder heads as required to obtain desired seat pressure (see note above). Assemble valve components. Check installed spring height. c. Repeat steps as necessary to reach the desired installed spring height. d. When all spring heights match, install valves using new valve guide seals (Part No. 18100044), purchased separately. |

1. | Install induction module and exhaust system.
2. | Install air cleaner assembly.
3. | Install fuel tank. | |
4. | Install main fuse. | |
5. | Install seat. After installing seat, pull up on the seat to verify that it is secure. See service manual. |
