Installation Requirements
Each head requires two 10 mm spark plugs. Harley-Davidson recommend Screamin' Eagle Performance Spark Plugs (see Screamin' Eagle Pro catalog).
On all models, a Top End Overhaul Gasket Kit and eight new Cylinder Head Flange Nuts must be used.
All of the above items must be purchased separately and are available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.
WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet references service manual information. A service manual for this year/model motorcycle is required for this installation. One is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.
Kit Contents
See Figure 2 and Table 1.
NOTICE
Do not exceed the maximum safe RPM specified below under any conditions. Exceeding the maximum safe engine RPM can result in equipment damage. (00248a)
NOTE
  • The valve springs in these cylinder head assemblies work with cams with up to 0.540 in (13.75 mm) lift, and up to 6800 rpm.
  • This product may be intended for race use only applications. It may also be certified for use in a 50-state U.S. EPA compliant application or kit. Use of any incomplete combination of certified kit products may not be legal for sale or use on U.S. market pollution controlled vehicles and may be restricted to closed course competition use. PREPARE
NOTE
The following steps are provided as an outline of the process. Follow all steps outlined in appropriate sections in service manual.
1. Position motorcycle on a suitable lift.
2. Remove seat.
3.
NOTE
If vehicle is equipped with Harley-Davidson Smart Security System, see owner's manual for instructions to disarm the system.
Remove main fuse.
WARNING
When servicing the fuel system, do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks in the vicinity. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00330a)
4. Remove fuel tank.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly.
6. Remove induction module.
7. Remove exhaust system.
REMOVE
Remove Cylinder Heads
1. Remove cylinder heads from engine. See service manual.
INSTALL
Install Cylinder Heads
NOTE
  • It is important to check valve-to-piston clearance. Harley-Davidson recommends that this inspection be performed by a Harley-Davidson dealer.
  • Valves must be adjusted to zero valve lash when checking clearance.
1. Check valve-to-piston clearance.
a. Apply a 1/8 in (3.2 mm) thick layer of clay to the crowns of both pistons in the areas where the valves meet the pistons.
b. Install the new cylinder heads from this kit per the service manual procedures, using the original head gaskets and cylinder head flange nuts.
c. Tighten the cylinder head flange nuts to the torque specifications listed (steps d - h):
d. Apply new engine oil underneath the flange of head bolt. Tighten.
Torque: 27.1–40.6 N·m (20–30 ft-lbs)
e. Loosen one turn -360°.
f. Torque nut.
Torque: 12.2–14.9 N·m (9–11 ft-lbs)
g. Tighten nut again.
Torque: 24.2–27.1 N·m (18–20 ft-lbs)
h. Final torque. Tighten additional degree value of 90°.
i. Assemble the heads and valve train.
j. Turn the engine (by hand) through two complete revolutions.
k. Remove the heads and measure the clay at its thinnest point. Clay must measure 0.060 in (1.52 mm) or more at the thinnest point. If this measurement does not meet the minimum thickness, the depth of the valve notches must be increased; however, the depth of the notches must not exceed 0.135 in (3.43 mm).
2.
NOTE
The valve springs on the new cylinder heads have an installed spring height of 1.535 in (38.99 mm), which equals 68.8 lbs (31.21 kg) of seat pressure.
Change installed valve spring height (seat pressure) if needed.
a. Compress valve springs and remove valve keepers, upper collars, springs, and valve stem seals on all four valves of each cylinder.
b. See Figure 1. Use shims or machine the cylinder heads as required to obtain desired seat pressure (see note above). Assemble valve components. Check installed spring height.
c. Repeat steps as necessary to reach the desired installed spring height.
d. When all spring heights match, install valves using new valve guide seals (Part No. 18100044), purchased separately.

Install Engine Components
1. Transfer automatic compression release valves from stock heads to heads supplied in kit. Refer to appropriate ELECTRICAL section in service manual.
2. Install cylinder heads and valve train to engine using new head gaskets from the Top End Overhaul Gasket Kit and new cylinder head flange nuts (both purchased separately). Refer to appropriate ENGINE section in service manual.
a. Use torquing sequence outlined in this instruction. See steps 1d - 1h in Install Cylinder Heads.
Final Assembly
NOTE
The following steps are provided as an outline of the process. Follow all steps outlined in appropriate sections in service manual.
1. Install induction module and exhaust system.
2. Install air cleaner assembly.
3. Install fuel tank.
4. Install main fuse.
5. Install seat. After installing seat, pull up on the seat to verify that it is secure.
Operation
  1. Start and run engine. Repeat several times to verify proper operation. Refer to BREAK-IN RIDING RULES in the owner's manual for instructions to break-in the motorcycle.
