Tools and Supplies Required
WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet refers to service manual information. A service manual for this year/model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.
Electrical Overload
NOTICE
It is possible to overload the vehicle's charging system by adding too many electrical accessories. If the combined electrical accessories operating at any one time consume more electrical current than the vehicle's charging system can produce, the electrical consumption can discharge the battery and cause damage to the vehicle's electrical system. (00211d)
WARNING
When installing any electrical accessory, be certain not to exceed the maximum amperage rating of the fuse or circuit breaker protecting the affected circuit being modified. Exceeding the maximum amperage can lead to electrical failures, which could result in death or serious injury. (00310a)
The Illuminated Chrome Mirror Cover Kit requires up to 100 mA additional current from the electrical system.

INSTALLATION
Preparation
Models with main fuse:
WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove main fuse before proceeding. (00251b)
  1. Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to remove the main fuse.
Models with main circuit breaker:
WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. (00048a)
  1. Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and disconnect the negative (black) battery cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. Retain all seat mounting hardware.
Installation
NOTE
Cover the work surface with an H-D Service Cover or clean shop towels to prevent scratching the finish of the outer fairing.
1. Remove the outer fairing per the instructions in the service manual. Lay the fairing face down on a sturdy work surface.
2. See Figure 2. Remove the mirrors (2), flange nuts (3) and plastic backing plates (4) securing the mirrors to each side of the inner fairing (1), and retain all items
3. Measure 25 mm (1 in) straight down (5) from the large mirror stud hole in the inner fairing, and make a mark.
4. Drill a 6 mm (¼ in) diameter hole (6) through the inner fairing at the mark.
5. See Figure 1. Obtain a chrome wire collar (3) from the kit, and press it into the new hole from the outside of the inner fairing. Gently tap into place with a soft-faced hammer.
6. Repeat Steps 3 through 5 on the opposite side of the inner fairing.
NOTE
Ambient temperature should be at least 10 °C (50 °F) for proper adhesion of the mirror cover to the mirror.
7. Clean the back surface of the mirrors with the alcohol pad (7) provided. Allow to dry thoroughly.
8. Obtain the primer tube (8) from the kit, and follow the instructions on the tube to activate the primer. When the primer is activated apply the primer to the back surface of one mirror.
NOTE
The Illuminated Chrome Mirror Covers are side-specific. The covers install with the wire harness exiting from the bottom.

9. Obtain the correct mirror cover from the kit. Rub the liners on the three pads on the back surface of the mirror cover to activate the adhesive, then remove the liners.
10. Place the mirror cover over the back surface of the mirror and press into place for a minimum of 60 seconds.
11. Repeat Steps 8 through 10 for the remaining mirror and cover.
NOTE
The plastic backing plates (removed earlier) are identified with a letter "L" (left) or "R" (right) stamped on the post. The mirrors are marked with a letter "L" or "R" stamped on the swivel block. Use the correct backing plate for each mirror by matching the letters.
12. Position the mirror on the outer face of the inner fairing, with the rounded side of the mirror outboard and the Bar & Shield logo upright.
a. Insert the mirror cover wiring harness through the chrome wire collar installed in Step 5.
b. Insert the mirror post through the original mirror mounting hole.
c. Place the correct plastic backing plate against the inner face of the inner fairing, engaging the two holes in the backing plate with the threaded stud and index pin on the mirror swivel block.
d. Install the flange nut on the threaded stud and tighten to 3.4–4.5 N·m (30–40 in-lbs).
e. Repeat for the remaining mirror on the other side of the fairing.

4. Select the red terminated wire from the left-side mirror cover (2), and push the terminal into the female connector cavity across from the violet wire on the left-side adapter harness until it clicks into place. Select the black terminated wire from the left-side mirror cover, and push the terminal into the female connector cavity across from the black wire on the left-side adapter harness until it clicks into place. The third cavity remains empty in both halves of the connector.
5. Repeat Step 4 for the right-side mirror (1).

RETURN TO SERVICE
1. Secure all wiring away from any moving parts, pinch points or extreme heat.
NOTE
Verify that the ignition/light key switch is in the OFF position before installing the main fuse/attaching the battery cables.
2. Models with main fuse: Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to install the main fuse. Models with main circuit breaker: Apply a light coat of Harley-Davidson electrical contact lubricant (Part Number 99861-02), petroleum jelly or corrosion retardant material to the negative battery terminal. Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to attach the negative battery cable.
3. Turn the ignition/light key switch to IGNITION, but do not start the motorcycle. Test for proper turn signal and mirror cover lamp operation. Proper operation of mirror cover lamps is:
a. Mirror cover lamps are not lit during normal vehicle operation.
b. The proper mirror cover lamp flashes along with the corresponding turn signal when activated.
c. BOTH mirror cover lamps flash when the emergency flashers are activated.
WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
4. Refer to the service manual, and follow instructions to install the seat.
5. Install the outer fairing per the instructions in the service manual. Adjust the mirrors for proper field of vision and compliance with local regulations.
