This instruction sheet refers to service manual information. A service manual for this year/model motorcycle is required for this installation. One is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.
ELECTRICAL OVERLOAD
NOTICE
It is possible to overload the vehicle's charging system by adding too many electrical accessories. If the combined electrical accessories operating at any one time consume more electrical current than the vehicle's charging system can produce, the electrical consumption can discharge the battery and cause damage to the vehicle's electrical system. (00211d)
WARNING
When installing any electrical accessory, be certain not to exceed the maximum amperage rating of the fuse or circuit breaker protecting the affected circuit being modified. Exceeding the maximum amperage can lead to electrical failures, which could result in death or serious injury. (00310a)
This kit requires up to 4.5 amps more current from the brake lamp circuit while brakes are applied.

WARNING
Be sure to follow manufacturer's instructions when using the UltraTorch UT-100 or any other radiant heating device. Failure to follow manufacturer's instructions can cause a fire, which could result in death or serious injury. (00335a)
  • Avoid directing heat toward any fuel system component. Extreme heat can cause fuel ignition/explosion. Death or serious injury could result.
  • Avoid directing heat toward any electrical system component other than the connectors on which heat shrink work is being performed.
  • Always keep hands away from tool tip area and heat shrink attachment.
  1. For 1997-1999 FLHR and FLHRCI models only: The circuit to which the brake lamp connects must be revised. Follow these steps: When these steps have been completed, make sure that the total draw on the instrument circuit does not exceed 15 amps.
    1. Reference the wiring diagram in the service manual appendix. Follow the blue wire from the stop lamp relay [124] to the main harness underneath the seat. Remove the cable strap holding the main harness to the frame .
    2. Locate the orange wire from the instrument circuit at the fuse block. Follow the wire to the main harness.
    3. Cut both blue and orange wires at a location convenient for splicing.
    4. Strip 9.5 mm (⅜ in) of insulation from each newly cut end of the orange wire. Strip 9.5 mm (⅜ in) of insulation from the cut end of the blue wire coming from the stop lamp relay. DO NOT strip the cut end of the blue wire coming from the main harness. This wire is no longer connected to the light circuit.
    5. See Figure 2. Insert the stop lamp relay blue wire (2) and the ends of both orange wires (1) into the sealed splice connector (3) from the kit.
    6. See the service manual appendix. Match the color of the connector with the color of the crimp cavity of the Crimp Tool (Part No. H-D 38125-8). Crimp the connector to all three wires with the Crimp Tool.
    7. See Figure 2. Using the Ultratorch UT-100 (H-D 39969), Robinair Heat Gun (H-D 25070) with Heatshrink Attachment (H-D 41183), or other suitable radiant heating device, heat the crimped splice to encapsulate the splice connection. Apply heat from the center of the crimp out to each end until the meltable sealant exudes out of both ends of the connector (5). Let the connector cool.
    8. Slide the shrink tube from the kit over the blue wire coming from the main harness. Heat the shrink tube to seal the bare end of the wire.
    9. Use cable straps from the kit to bundle and secure the main harness to the frame in the original position.
  2. ALL models: Remove the screws from the original amber rear turn signal lens. Remove and discard the lens.
  3. See Figure 3. Get one of the red turn signal lenses (2) from the kit. Install the red lens into the rear turn signal housing. Fasten with the original screws. Tighten securely. Repeat for the other lens.
