Installation Requirements
Unless already installed: A Heavy Breather air cleaner kit must be purchased separately. See a Harley-Davidson dealer.
Loctite® 243 Medium Strength Threadlocker and Sealant - Blue (Part No. 99642-97) is required for proper installation of this kit.
WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00308b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet refers to service manual information. A service manual for your year/model motorcycle is required for this installation. One is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.

PREPARATION
WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove main fuse before proceeding. (00251b)
NOTE
  • WITH security siren: With security fob present, turn ignition switch ON. See the service manual. Disarm security system. Turn ignition switch OFF. IMMEDIATELY remove the main fuse.
  • WITHOUT security siren: See the service manual. Remove main fuse.
WARNING
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)
1. Refer to the service manual. Remove seat. Disconnect both battery cables, negative battery cable first. Save all seat mounting hardware.
WARNING
When servicing the fuel system, do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks in the vicinity. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00330a)
2. If a Heavy Breather air cleaner kit IS already installed: Remove the air cleaner as you would for AIR FILTER ELEMENT MAINTENANCE, per the instructions in THAT kit. Perform the element maintenance if needed. If a Heavy Breather air cleaner kit IS NOT already installed: Install a new Heavy Breather air cleaner (purchased separately) per the instructions in THAT kit, up to the point of air filter element installation. The new air filter element is PRE-OILED and ready to install.
INSTALLATION
1. See Figure 1. Loosen the band clamp (C). Pull the currently installed air filter (A) off the intake tube (F). A vehicle with fairing lowers requires removal of the intake tube.
2. Remove the adhesive backing from the foam circle (2). place the foam circle inside of the small end of the decorative cover (1).
NOTE
The Heavy Breather air filter (A) comes assembled. The opening (E) in the band clamp cover (D) provides access to the hose clamp (C) adjusting screw. When the filter is installed correctly, the cover opening faces the engine and the screw head faces down.
3. Place the decorative cover over the filter assembly.
NOTE
Refer to the service manual for reusing of fasteners with threadlocking agents.
When servicing the air cleaner or cover, apply a few drops of Loctite 243 - Blue to the clean screw threads.
4. Place the mounting ring (3) over the band clamp cover (D). Apply Loctite 243 to the four screws (4). Loosely insert the screws into the decorative cover. Alternately tighten the screws to 1.7 N·m (15 in-lbs).
5. Install the air filter element/cover assembly onto the intake tube (F). Tighten the clamp around the filter element flange to 5.1–6.2 N·m (45–55 in-lbs).
WARNING
Connect positive (+) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00068a)
6. See the service manual. Attach the battery cables (positive cable first). Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or corrosion retardant material to battery terminals.
WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
7. Install seat per the service manual.
MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING
  1. Thoroughly clean chrome with a good quality chrome cleaner, such as CHROME CLEAN & SHINE (Part No. 93600031 U.S., 93600082 International) or SPRAY CLEANER & POLISH (Part No. 93600029 U.S., 93600084 International).
  2. After cleaning and polishing, seal the finish with GLAZE POLY SEALANT (Part No. 93600026 U.S., 93600079 International).
