Installation Requirements
WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Disconnecting spark plug cable with engine running can result in electric shock and death or serious injury. (00464b)
NOTE
This instruction sheet references service manual information. A service manual for the year and model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from:
PREPARE
1. Remove main fuse. See service manual.
2. Remove seat. See service manual.
3. Remove fuel tank. See service manual.
REMOVE
NOTE
Remove cable by pulling on rubber boot only. Do not pull on cable or damage can result.
Pull and twist simultaneously to remove rubber boot.
New spark plug cables route the same as the original cables. Note the position of the each cable as it passes over or under other components and route the new cables in the same path as they were originally.
1. Refer to Table 2. Remove cable retainers (5).
2. Disconnect cable boots from coil.
3. Note position and orientation of clips and straps under frame for each right side cable.
a. Disconnect cable clips from mounting locations.
4. Disconnect boots from spark plug using special tool.

Special Tool: ADJUSTABLE SPARK PLUG WIRE PULLER (HD-52006)

5. Precisely note the routing of the original cable before removal.
6. Remove spark plug cables.
INSTALL
1. Refer to Table 2. Apply dielectric grease (8) to inside of coil (A) and spark plug boots (B).
NOTE
Incorrectly installed spark plug cables lead to poor engine performance due to lack of spark to one or both cylinders.
2. Loosely install new cables retainers (5, 6).
3. Route and connect new spark plug cables. See service manual.
a. For Softail Models See Figure 2.
b. For Touring Models See Figure 3.
4. Verify proper spark plug cable routing and clearance and secure all cable straps and clips.
NOTE
Spark plug cable or cable clip should not make contact with fuel tank.
5. Position new cable retainers in original position near coil as shown.

COMPLETE
1. Install fuel tank. See service manual.
2. Install seat. After installing seat, pull up on the seat to verify that it is secure. See service manual.
3. Install main fuse. See service manual.
