Consumers are responsible for recycling or proper disposal of used batteries. Dispose in accordance with methods that meet or exceed all state and federal environmental laws.
  • Never mix lithium-ion battery cores with lead acid cores.

If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. NOTE
This instruction sheet references owner's manual and service manual information. A service manual is available from a Harley-Davidson dealer.
If it is necessary to charge the battery, a charger with a lithium-ion charging mode is required to fully charge the battery. Harley-Davidson recommends the use of a Harley-Davidson battery charger with lithium-ion charging mode.

Safety
WARNING
Misused or abused lithium-ion batteries can get hot, explode or ignite, or potentially release gas, smoke or liquid. Always follow battery safety precautions. Misuse or abuse of lithium-ion batteries could result in death or serious injury. (07729b)
Safety Precautions
Handling
  • Do not use battery if it gives off an odor, generates heat, releases gas, smoke or liquid, becomes discolored, or deformed or appears abnormal in any way. If the battery is in use or being recharged, remove it from the motorcycle or charger immediately and discontinue use. Wear a protective face shield, rubberized gloves, respiratory protection and protective clothing when handling a damaged battery to prevent exposure to internal battery contents.
  • Never attempt to open or disassemble a battery. If accidental contact with internal battery contents occurs, wash the affected skin area and contact a doctor for further medical assistance.
  • Do not pierce the battery case with a nail or other sharp objects, do not break it open, do not step on it.
  • Do not place the battery in a microwave oven or pressurized container.
  • Do not immerse the battery in water.
  • Do not strike, throw or subject the battery to severe physical shock.
  • Do not press on indicator button longer than a few seconds.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Installation
  • Do not short-circuit the battery by connecting wire or other metal objects to the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals.
  • Do not reverse the positive (+) or negative (-) terminals.
  • Do not install the battery in a vehicle with a modified Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) charging system, alarm system, drive train, etc.
  • Do not fit extra Audio, Anti-theft lock and other electronic device to your vehicle by yourself.
  • Do not directly solder to the battery terminals.
  • Do not use the battery in combination with other batteries (for example, using more than one battery in parallel or in series).
  • Always affix battery cables to battery terminals securely with original screws and nuts supplied. The battery and/or vehicle may be damaged by sparks caused by loose connections.
Charging
  • Do not recharge battery if voltage is below 8 V to prevent hazardous situations. Charging a deep discharged battery can cause release of smoke, gas and liquids.
  • To prevent damage to the battery, the charging voltage should NEVER be higher than 15 V.
  • Do not overcharge: In case of overcharging, a degassing event with smoke generation might occur.
  • Do not connect the battery directly to a wall outlet (Alternating Current (AC) outlet).
  • Only charge or discharge the battery in a well-ventilated area.
  • Always use a Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) battery specific battery charger to charge the Li-ion battery, verify charging voltage is between 14–15 V.
  • If motorcycle is not equipped with a battery tender connector, then remove battery from motorcycle prior to charging. See owner's manual.
Storage
  • Avoid contact with any corrosive substance.
  • Do not store the battery near sources of fire, heat, water or rain.
In the Event of Contact with Internal Battery Contents
WARNING
Contact with internal battery contents can have serious health effects. Wear protective face shield, rubberized gloves, respiratory protection, and protective clothing when handling damaged batteries. Failure to wear proper protective gear while handling a damaged battery could result in death or serious injury.

General information: The following first aid measures are required only in case of exposure to internal battery contents after damage of the external battery casing.

  • Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing
  • Seek medical treatment by eye specialist
After Ingestion
  • Rinse mouth
  • Drink plenty of water or milk
  • Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person
  • Do not induce vomiting
  • Call a physician immediately

INSTALLATION
Battery Cable Routing
Route all battery cables as described in the applicable service manual.
Battery Installation and Connection
1. Remove and disconnect the battery. See owner's manual for instructions. Pay attention to all safety messages within the manual and remove battery from motorcycle.
2. Clean battery cable connectors of oxidation/corrosion and apply a light coat of contact lubricant to battery terminals and cable connectors.ELECTRICAL CONTACT LUBRICANT (11300004)
3. All except Sportster: See Figure 3. Install fully-charged battery.
NOTE
Using a Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM) verify battery is fully charged to 13.4 V. Refer to Table 2.
a. Verify correct caddy spacer (3). Refer to Table 3.
b. Install battery in to caddy spacer, see orientation in Figure 3.
c. Install battery assembly.
4. Sportster: Install fully-charged battery.
5. 2004-2007 Softail, 2004-2013 Sportster, 2007 - 2017 VRSC: Require a separate purchase of kit 66000234.
a. See Figure 2. Insert M6x1x12mm screw (1) through the positive battery cable (red) (2), then the spacer (3) and into threaded hole of battery positive (+) terminal (4).
b. Insert M6x1x12mm screw (1) through battery negative cable (black) (2), then the spacer (3) and into threaded hole of battery negative (-) terminal (4).
6. Tighten both screws.
Torque: 5.7–6.8 N·m (50–60 in-lbs)

WARNING
Connect positive (+) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00068a)
NOTICE
Connect the cables to the correct battery terminals. Failure to do so could result in damage to the motorcycle electrical system. (00215a)
NOTICE
Do not over-tighten bolts on battery terminals. Use recommended torque values. Over-tightening battery terminal bolts could result in damage to battery terminals. (00216a)
7. Refer to a owner's manual and connect the battery. On most models, insert screw through battery positive cable (red) into threaded hole of battery positive (+) terminal. Tighten. Insert screw through negative battery cable (black) into threaded hole of battery negative (-) terminal. Tighten.
Torque: 5.7–6.8 N·m (50–60 in-lbs) Terminal screw
8. Clean battery cable connectors of any oxidation/corrosion and apply a light coating contact lubricant to the battery terminals and cable connectors.ELECTRICAL CONTACT LUBRICANT (11300004)
9. Touring models only: See Figure 3. Install foam spacer (2).
a. Place foam spacer (2) on top center of battery.
b. Install electronic caddy on top of foam spacer (2).
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
NOTE
The cranking performance will be affected if environment temperature is lower than -10 °C (14.0 °F).
Battery Capacity Indicator
The battery status indicator on top the battery displays a general state of charge of the battery when test button is pressed. Voltage (V) should be checked with DVOM to verify that the battery is fully charged before delivering to customer or installing in a vehicle.
Battery Charging
WARNING
Gasses released during charging, could cause death or serious injury. Charge battery in a well-ventilated area. Keep open flames, electrical sparks and smoking materials away from battery at all times. KEEP BATTERIES AWAY FROM CHILDREN. (07805a)
1. Verify that the battery charger has a mode for lithium-ion charging.
NOTE
If it is necessary to charge the battery, a charger with a lithium-ion charging mode is required to fully charge the battery. Harley-Davidson recommends the use of a Harley-Davidson battery charger with lithium-ion charging mode.
2. Inspect battery charger, verify that the charger leads are not damaged, frayed or loose.
3. Never charge a battery without first reviewing the instructions for the charger being used.
4. Perform a battery charge test. On the battery capacity indicator press test button to view a general indication of battery charge status. Verify battery state of charge with a DVOM to determine if the battery needs charging.
a. Battery is fully charged at 13.4 V.
b. Only charge if reading is equal to or greater than 8 V.
c. If battery is less than 8 V: If battery is within the applicable warranty period, return to Harley-Davidson dealer.
5. If necessary, see applicable owner's manual and remove the battery from the motorcycle. Place the battery on a level surface.
NOTE
If motorcycle is not equipped with a battery tender connector, then remove battery from motorcycle before charging. See owner's manual.
6. Inspect battery for damage. Replace battery if visibly damaged or frozen.
WARNING
Unplug or turn OFF battery charger before connecting charger cables to battery. Connecting cables with charger ON can cause a spark and battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00066a)
NOTICE
Do not reverse the charger connections described in the following steps or the charging system of the motorcycle could be damaged. (00214a)
7. Connect the red charger lead to the positive (+) terminal of the battery.
8. Connect the black charger lead to the negative (-) terminal of the battery.
WARNING
If battery becomes hot, gassing or spewing of electrolyte can occur, which could cause death or serious injury. Unplug or turn OFF the charger until battery cools. (00412b)
NOTICE
If battery releases an excessive amount of gas during charging, decrease the charging rate. Overheating can result in plate distortion, internal shorting, drying out or damage. (00413b)
9. See Table 2 for charging conditions. Step away from the battery and turn on the charger.

Based on available Battery Tender™ charger sizes from Harley-Davidson.
Times provided for reference. Chargers are automatic. Verify that charger is in "LITHIUM" mode before starting to charge. Continue charging until charger indicates full.

Unplug or turn OFF battery charger before disconnecting charger cables from battery. Disconnecting clamps with charger ON can cause a spark and battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00067a)
  1. After the battery is fully charged, turn off or unplug the battery charger, then disconnect the black battery charger lead to the negative (-) terminal of the battery.
  2. Disconnect the red battery charger lead to the positive (+) terminal of the battery.
  3. Mark the charging date on the battery.
Battery Storage
If the motorcycle will not be operated for several months, such as during the winter season, remove the battery from the motorcycle and charge fully. See BATTERY CHARGING.
To reduce self-discharge rate, store battery in a cool (not freezing), dry place.
  • Always store in a clean, dry, and ventilated environment of -20–40 °C (-4–104 °F).
  • Check the battery State of Charge (SOC) every 6 months (180 days). Test battery V and charge battery if needed. Refer to Table 2.
NOTE
Harley-Davidson Constant Monitoring Battery Chargers in Lithium-Ion mode may be used to maintain battery charge for extended periods of time without risk of overcharging.
When returning a battery to service after storage, refer to the instructions under BATTERY CHARGING.
Transportation
  • Do not strike, throw, or subject battery to severe physical shock.
  • Do not transport batteries together with flammable, explosive or sharp objects.
  • Battery should be packed with insulation and shockproof material to avoid damage from sudden jolts and collisions.
  • Battery should be handled with care when loading and unloading during transport.
