Installation Requirements
WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)
    These items are available at a Harley-Davidson dealership.
  • 2017 and later Milwaukee Eight engines: Separate purchase of Original Equipment (OE) Cylinder Head Gasket (Part No. 16500305 or 16500326) may be required.
  • 2017 and later Milwaukee Eight engines: Separate purchase of Screamin' Eagle® (SE) Cylinder Metal Head Gasket may be required.
NOTE
This instruction sheet references service manual information. A service manual for the year and model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from:
PREPARE
NOTE
It is recommended that the head gasket is replaced when the joint surface has had a break in surface torque.
1. Disconnect negative battery cable. See service manual.
REMOVE
NOTE
Once cylinder head flange nuts are loosened, the cylinder head gasket should be replaced.
1. Remove cylinder head. See service manual.
a. Remove and discard cylinder head gasket and flange nuts.
INSTALL
1. Clean all gasket surfaces.
2. Thoroughly flush all coolant and oil passages to remove loose debris.
3. See Figure 3. Install cylinder head. See service manual.
a. Install new gasket with the part number facing up.
b. Install cylinder head on dowel pins.
4. Install new cylinder head flange nuts.
NOTE
DO NOT follow torque or tightening sequence in the service manual for this kit.
a. Apply new engine oil underneath the head flange nuts (1).
b. Apply a few droplets to the cylinder head where the flange nut (1) will sit.
c. Install cylinder head flange nuts (1).
5. See Figure 2. Tighten new head nuts in five stages following sequence shown.
a. Tighten.
Torque: 27–40.5 N·m (20–30 ft-lbs) Cylinder head nut torque step 1.
b. Loosen one full turn.
Torque: -360° (-360°) Cylinder head nut torque step 2. Loosen one turn.
c. Tighten.
Torque: 12–15 N·m (9–11 ft-lbs) Cylinder head nut torque step 3.
d. Tighten.
Torque: 34–37 N·m (25–27 ft-lbs) Cylinder head nut torque step 4 for OE cylinder head gasket.
Torque: 25–27 N·m (18–20 ft-lbs) Cylinder head nut torque step 4 for Screamin' Eagle metal cylinder head gasket.
e. Tighten to final degree value.
Torque: 85–95° () Cylinder head nut torque step 5.
6. Finish installing cylinder head and remaining components. See service manual.
