Installation Requirements
WARNING
Rider and passenger safety depend upon the correct installation of this kit. Use the appropriate service manual procedures. If the procedure is not within your capabilities or you do not have the correct tools, have a Harley-Davidson dealer perform the installation. Improper installation of this kit could result in death or serious injury. (00333b)

  • Separate purchase of Shock Adjuster Recall Kit (Part No. 91500114) may be required for installation.
PREPARE
1. Remove seat. See service manual.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable. See service manual.
3. Remove fender, if necessary. See service manual.
4. Using a suitable lift, support frame and raise slightly to relieve pressure on the shock. See service manual.
5. See Figure 3. Inspect Pre-Load Adjuster (PLA) mounting to frame crossmember.
a. No lock nut is present: Separate purchase of Part No. (91500114) is required. Refer to Install Recall Kit.
b. Lock nut is present: Proceed to Removal and Install.
Install Recall Kit
1. See Figure 2. Install locking pliers (2) to PLA (3) and crossmember bracket (4).
2. Remove Original Equipment (OE) ¼-20 inch screw.
NOTE
Use extreme caution to not damage the hydraulic hose connecting the PLA to the shock.
3. Using 11/32 inch drill bit (1), drill through crossmember bracket (4) and PLA (3).
a. Using the existing hole on crossmember bracket (4) as a guide.
4. Remove locking pliers (2) and separate the PLA (3) from crossmember bracket (4).
a. Remove any burrs from drilling the components.
b. Clean metal chips from under the seat area.
c. Using Frame Paint Touch-Up Pen (Part No. 93936) or local approved equivalent for international dealers, touch up the brackets from drilling and to prevent any corrosion from forming.
d. Allow paint to dry.

REMOVE
1. Remove frame crossmember. See service manual.
2. See Figure 4. Remove cable strap (2).
3. See Figure 1. Remove pinch bolt (A).
4. Remove lower shock screw (B).
5. Remove upper shock screw (C).
6. Remove rear shock (1).
INSTALL
1. Install rear shock.
2. Install lower shock screw (B). Tighten.
Torque: 95–102 N·m (70–75 ft-lbs) Lower shock screw
3. Apply threadlocker to upper shock screw (C).
4. Align rear fork to upper shock mount.
5. Install upper shock screw (C). Tighten.
Torque: 108–122 N·m (80–90 ft-lbs) Upper shock screw
6. Apply threadlocker to pinch bolt (A).
7. Install pinch bolt (A). Tighten.
Torque: 16–20 N·m (12–15 ft-lbs) Pinch bolt
8. See Figure 4. Install cable strap (2).
9. See Figure 3. Install PLA (1) to crossmember (4).
10. Install 5/16-inch screw (3) and locknut (2). Tighten.
Torque: 32.8–36.3 N·m (24–27 ft-lbs)

COMPLETE
1. Refer to Table 3. Adjust shock absorber.
2. Connect negative battery cable. See service manual.
3. Install frame crossmember. See service manual.
4. Install fender, if removed. See service manual.
5. Install seat. See service manual.
a. After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position.
PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT
Adjust suspension to suit load conditions, riding style and personal comfort. Increase preload to accommodate the total load. Reduce preload if carrying less weight. Do not exceed maximum GVWR or GAWR when loading.
See Figure 5. Rotate adjustment screw clockwise to increase preload setting, or counterclockwise to decrease preload setting until indicator shows appropriate preload setting.
Refer to Table 3. for new preload settings.
