NOTE
All numbers referenced in steps that follow refer to Figure 1 and Table 4.
1. Remove the existing shifter rod.
2. Adjust the new shifter rod to match the length of the shifter rod just removed by loosening the locknuts (3), adjusting the length of the rod, then re-tightening the locknuts. Tighten.
Torque: 27–32 N·m (20–24 ft-lbs) hex locknut
3. With STRAIGHT rear shifter rod lever: Discard the spacer (7). Place the cover (1) over the shifter rod lever. With OFFSET rear shifter rod lever: Place the spacer (7) and cover (1) over the shifter rod lever.
4. Apply threadlocker to the threads of one of the cap screws (5), and thread the screw through the rear of the shifter rod and into the shifter rod lever. Secure screw (5). Tighten.
Torque: 18–22 N·m (13–16 ft-lbs) hex head cap screw

5. On 1999 and later FLHT, FLHR, and FXDWG models, place the rod end on the outside of the shifter lever, then apply threadlocker to the threads of the other cap screw (5), and attach the front of the shifter rod (6) to the shifter lever with the screw (5) and acorn nut (4) in the order shown in Figure 1 (acorn nut facing out). Secure acorn nut (4). Tighten.
Torque: 18–22 N·m (13–16 ft-lbs) hex acorn nut

6. On all models except 1999 and later FLHT, FLHR, and FXDWG, place the rod end on the inside of the shifter lever, then apply threadlocker to the threads of the other cap screw (5), and attach the front of the shifter rod (6) to the shifter lever with the screw (5) and acorn nut (4) as shown. Secure acorn nut (4). Tighten.
Torque: 18–22 N·m (13–16 ft-lbs) hex acorn nut
