PREPARATION
WARNING
Be sure headlamp, tail and stop lamp and turn signals are operating properly before riding. Poor visibility of rider to other motorists can result in death or serious injury. (00478b)
  1. Install Turn Signal Relocation Kit (if applicable) according to the instructions included in that kit. Refer to P&A Retail Catalog.
  2. NOTE
    The chrome saddlebag supports must be installed before the leather throw-over saddlebags.
  3. Install appropriate Chrome Saddlebag Support Kit according to the instructions included in that kit. Refer to P&A Retail Catalog.
INSTALLATION
NOTE
Saddlebags must be clear of rear wheel, mufflers, drive chain or belt, sprocket, rear brake components, swingarm and rear shocks.
WARNING
Do not exceed saddlebag weight capacity. Put equal weight in each bag. Too much weight in saddlebags can cause loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00383a)
NOTE
Maximum saddlebag weight capacity is 7 pounds (3.18 Kg).
XL1200N Models With Solo Seat
1. Remove seat following the instructions in the owner's manual. Discard mounting hardware.
2. See Figure 1. Place throw-over saddlebags and securing straps (1) over top of rear fender.

3. Align extra set of holes in saddlebags (2) over the seat mounting nut location.
4. Place seat and mounting bracket over rear hole as shown in Figure 2.
5. See Figure 2. Secure seat and throw-over saddlebags to rear fender using screw (1) and star washer (2) from kit.
6. Check to make sure saddlebags do not interfere with license plate mount.
7. Proceed to All Models section.

Sportster Models with 2-Up Seat
  1. Place throw-over saddlebags on passenger seat with securing straps toward front of vehicle.
  2. Proceed to All Models section.
Dyna Models with 2-Up Seat or Pillion
1. Remove seat or pillion following the instructions in the owner's manual.
2. Place throw-over saddlebags on rear fender with securing straps toward front of vehicle.
3. Relace top of throw-over saddlebags tighter or looser if necessary.
WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
4. Install seat or pillion following the instructions in the owner's manual. Pull up on seat or pillion to verify proper installation.
5. Proceed to All Models section.
All Models
NOTE
Saddlebags should ride high and fit snugly against the saddlebag supports. Relace top of throw-over saddlebags tighter or looser if necessary.
  1. Fasten all securing straps to chrome saddlebag supports.
  2. NOTE
    After both saddlebags are mounted correctly, check all securing straps to make sure they do not interfere with (or are exposed to) moving parts.
  3. Tuck the tails of the leather straps underneath that part of the straps that connect the two saddlebags.
  4. Tie straps on top of throw-over saddlebags to secure in place.
Install Reflectors
NOTE
Ambient temperature should be at least 16 °C (60 °F) for proper adhesion of the reflectors to the reflector mounts.
Do not remove the liner until ready to apply the reflector.
WARNING
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 108 requires motorcycles to be equipped with rear and side reflectors. Be sure rear and side reflectors are properly mounted. Poor visibility of rider to other motorists can result in death or serious injury. (00336b)

2. Mark holes on saddlebag with pen or other suitable tool.

3. Clean the surface of the reflector mount (1) where reflector will be installed with soapy water or a mixture of 50-70% isopropyl alcohol and 30-50% distilled water. Allow to dry thoroughly.
4. Remove the liner from the adhesive backing of the reflector (2). Carefully position the reflector to the reflector mount, and press firmly into place. Hold the reflector in position with steady pressure for at least one minute.
5. Using a suitable tool, make two 3/16 in. holes in saddlebag at locations marked in Step 2.
6. Install reflector mount (1) on saddlebag using two push nuts (3). The push nuts are installed from inside the saddlebag.
NOTE
Allow AT LEAST 24 hours after applying the reflector before exposing the area to vigorous washing, strong water spray or extreme weather.
The adhesive bond will increase to maximum strength after about 72 hours at normal room temperature.
