This instruction sheet references service manual information. A service manual for this model motorcycle is required for this installation and is available from a Harley-Davidson Dealer.
The help of an assistant will aid in the proper alignment of the adhesive-backed template.
Electrical Overload
NOTICE
It is possible to overload the vehicle's charging system by adding too many electrical accessories. If the combined electrical accessories operating at any one time consume more electrical current than the vehicle's charging system can produce, the electrical consumption can discharge the battery and cause damage to the vehicle's electrical system. When installing any electrical accessory, be certain not to exceed the maximum amperage rating of the fuse or circuit breaker protecting the affected circuit being modified. Exceeding the maximum amperage can lead to electrical failures, which could result in death or serious injury. (00310a)
This Fairing Accent Trim and Auxiliary Marker Lamp Kit requires up to 184 mA additional current from the electrical system.

PREPARATION
Models with main FUSE:
WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, remove main fuse before proceeding. (00251b)
  1. Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to remove the main fuse.
Models with main CIRCUIT BREAKER:
WARNING
To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. (00048a)
  1. Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to remove the seat and disconnect the negative (black) battery cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. Retain all seat mounting hardware.
INSTALLATION
Mark the Fairing Centerline
1. See Figure 1. Apply a strip of masking tape (2) to the outer fairing (1), running from the center windshield screw (3) to the top center of the fairing headlight visor.

2. Cover both sides of the fairing with wide masking tape in the general areas (5) where the accent trim assemblies will be installed.
3. Obtain the monofilament string (6) from the kit. Loosen the right-side windshield mounting screw, and loop one end of the string over the screw head (4), seating against the screw shank.
4. Place the very tip of a pencil (7) into the other loop. Pull the string tight while holding the pencil perpendicular to the fairing surface. Note the string tension applied.
5. Swing an arc (8) marking the centerline masking tape. Remove the string and tighten the windshield screw.
NOTE
For the left side, be sure to pull the string with the same tension that was used on the right side while keeping the pencil perpendicular to the fairing surface.
6. Repeat the process using the left windshield mounting screw. Remove the string and tighten the windshield screw. The two pencil arcs will have created an "X" on the masking tape.
7. Loosen the center windshield screw. Loop the string over the screw. Pull the string tight at the headlight visor, and align it with the center of the "X" on the masking tape.
8. Place two pencil marks (9) on the masking tape directly beneath the string approximately 6-8 inches (150-200 mm) apart.
9. Remove the string and tighten the windshield screw. Draw a line connecting the marks using a flexible straight edge. This line defines the centerline of the fairing.
Locate and Drill Fairing Holes
1. See Figure 2. Obtain the "L" shaped template (1) from the kit.

2. Position the template on edge and along the centerline with the long leg of the template against the surface of the fairing and with the short leg against the fairing headlight visor.
3. Place a mark on the centerline masking tape at the tip of the template.
4. Obtain the adhesive-backed template (2) from the kit, remove the backing material and apply the template to the fairing. Position the center point of the lower notch in the template at the mark drawn in step 3. Position the center point of the upper notch in the template along the centerline.
5. Smooth the "wings" of the template out to both sides. Make sure that there are no wrinkles in the template.
6. Have an assistant hold the motorcycle in an upright riding position. Visually inspect the placement of the template for symmetry. Lift the template and reposition it as needed to achieve the desired results.
7. Using a pencil, mark the fairing through the holes (3) in the adhesive-backed template. Remove the template.
8. Remove the outer fairing from the vehicle per the instructions in the service manual.
9. Drill a 3/16-inch diameter hole in each of the locations marked in step 7.
10. See Figure 5. Install the right-side rubber gasket (3) to the right-side chrome accent trim piece (2).
a. Begin at one end, making sure that the gasket lip engages the accent edge.
b. Adhere the gasket to the accent by sequentially removing the release liner from the adhesive tape patches (A) located on the inside surface of the gasket. Press the gasket to the accent at each patch location.
11. Insert a #8-32 flat head screw (9) into the hole on the narrow end of the accent and gasket assembly and then through the right-side hole in the fairing.
12. Install a flat washer (10) and lock nut (11) onto the screw threads. Gently snug the accent assembly to the fairing, but do not tighten.
13. See Figure 2. Pivot the accent assembly (4) about the screw until it seats itself along the fairing. Make sure that gaps between the fairing and the gasket are minimized.
14. Apply a piece of masking tape across the outboard end of the accent assembly to temporarily hold it in position on the fairing.
15. Repeat steps 10 through 14 for the left side accent.
16. Visually inspect the positioning of the accents for symmetry. Reposition as needed to achieve the best appearance.
17. Use the accents as templates to mark the remaining mounting holes (5 and 6) on each side of the fairing.
18. See the inset in Figure 2 . Trace (7) around the arcs created by the Bar and Shield feature on both accents.
19. Remove the accents from the fairing.
20. Locate the approximate center of the arcs traced in step 18 on each side of the fairing. Draw a point 0.250 inch (6.4 mm) inboard of the arc center.
21. Drill a 1/2-inch diameter hole at each of these locations (a stepped drill bit is recommended). Drill a 3/16-inch diameter hole at each of the four remaining marked locations.
22. Remove all masking tape from the fairing. Clean the masking tape area with a mixture of 50 to 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30 to 50% distilled water. Allow to dry thoroughly.
Install the Fairing Trim and Auxiliary Lamps
  1. See Figure 5. Obtain the right side LED marker lamp module (4). Remove the release liner from the adhesive tape located on the face of the lens.
  2. From the backside, affix the LED module to the chrome accent trim piece.
  3. Insert the LED wires through the wiring hole in the fairing. Position the accent assembly against the fairing and install using #8-32 flat head screws (9), flat washers (10) and lock nuts (11). Tighten the screws, but DO NOT over-compress the gasket.
  4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the left side accent assembly.
Connect the Auxiliary Lamp Wiring
  1. See Figure 3 and Figure 4. Determine the wiring based on the model year vehicle. Insert the terminals of the correct colored wires into the correct pin or socket housing numbered cavities as shown For 2006 and later models: Continue at step 2. For 1996 through 2005 models: Proceed to step 10.
  2. 2006 and later models: See Figure 5. Obtain the following items from the kit:
  • the right-side (12) and left-side (13) wiring harnesses
  • two three-way pin housings (14)
  • two four-way pin housings (15)
  • two three-way socket housings (17)
  • two four-way socket housings (18)
23. See Figure 3 and the wiring diagrams in the service manual. Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to separate the four-way Multilock connectors [31R] and [31L] supplying the left and right front turn signals (10) and (11) from the vehicle interconnect harness (9).
NOTE
The harnesses are identical except for the color of one of the wires.
  • The right-side harness contains a brown wire.
  • The left-side harness contains a violet wire.
24. At one end of the right-side Marker Lamp Kit wiring harness (3) are four wires with socket terminals. Follow the color coding in Figure 3 , and insert the terminals into the correct cavities of a four-way socket housing (8) according to the instructions in the service manual.
25. At the opposite end of the wiring harness are four wires with pin terminals. Follow the color coding to insert the terminals into the correct cavities of a four-way pin housing (7).
26. Follow the color coding to insert the remaining pin terminals into the correct cavities of a three-way pin housing (6).
27. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for the left-side Marker Lamp Kit wiring harness (4).
28. Insert the marker lamp (1 and 2) socket terminals into the correct cavities of the two three-way socket housings (5).
29. Plug the four-way socket housings (8) from the Marker Lamp Kit wiring harnesses into the open four-way pin housings on the interconnect harness (9). Plug the four-way pin housings (7) from the Marker Lamp Kit wiring harnesses into the open four-way socket housings leading to the front turn signals. Proceed to step 16.

30. 1996 through 2005 models: See Figure 5. Obtain the following items from the kit:
  • the right-side (12) and left-side (13) wiring harnesses
  • two three-way pin housings (14)
  • one six-way pin housing (16)
  • two three-way socket housings (17)
  • one six-way socket housing (19)
31. See Figure 4 and the wiring diagrams in the service manual. Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to separate the six-way Multilock connector [31] supplying the left and right front turn signals (10) from the vehicle interconnect harness (9).
NOTE
The harnesses are identical except for the color of one of the wires.

32. At one end of the right-side Marker Lamp Kit wiring harness (3) are four wires with socket terminals. Follow the color coding in Figure 4 , and insert the terminals into the correct cavities of the six-way socket housing (8) according to the instructions in the service manual. Repeat for the left-side Marker Lamp Kit wiring harness (4).
NOTE
The gray/black wires are not used on 2005 and earlier models, and may be removed.
33. At the opposite end of each wiring harness are four wires with pin terminals. Follow the color coding to insert the terminals into the correct cavities of the six-way pin housing (7).
34. Follow the color coding to insert the remaining pin terminals into the correct cavities of the two three-way pin housings (6). Insert the marker lamp (1 and 2) socket terminals into the correct cavities of the two three-way socket housings (5).
35. Plug the six-way socket housing from the Marker Lamp Kit wiring harnesses into the open six-way pin housing on the interconnect harness. Plug the six-way pin housing from the Marker Lamp Kit wiring harnesses into the open six-way socket housing leading to the front turn signals.
36. ALL models: Position the fairing in close proximity to its installed position. Plug the three-way pin housings from the Marker Lamp Kit wiring harnesses into the marker lamp socket housings. Retain the wiring harnesses to harnesses or components already on the vehicle using the cable straps (21) supplied.
37. Reinstall the fairing per the instructions in the service manual.
Return to Service
  1. Verify that the ignition/key switch is turned to the OFF position. Models with main FUSE: Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to install the main fuse. Models with main CIRCUIT BREAKER: Apply a light coat of Harley-Davidson electrical contact lubricant (part number 99861-02), petroleum jelly or corrosion retardant material to the negative battery terminal. Refer to the service manual and follow the instructions given to attach the negative battery cable. Refer to the service manual, and follow instructions to install the seat.
  2. Turn the ignition/key switch to IGNITION, but do not start the motorcycle. Test for proper turn signal and marker lamp operation. Proper operation of marker lamps is:
    1. Both marker lamps are illuminated at all times when the ignition is ON.
    2. The proper marker lamp flashes along with the corresponding turn signal when activated.
    3. Both marker lamps flash when the emergency flashers are activated.
