Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), along with designing a work environment with the proper areas and signage, can help keep you and your personnel safe when servicing EVs. Personnel should avoid contact with HV batteries and cables. Always use recommended PPE when working and ensure the shop is equipped with proper emergency equipment also.
High-Voltage Gloves – Used for personal protection while working on high-voltage circuits and components on or around EVs. Gloves should be inspected before and after each use for pinholes or cuts. Damaged or defective gloves should be discarded immediately. Always check the date on the gloves to ensure they are not expired.
Safety Hook – Used to remove a person who is being shocked. During a shock event, the body loses the ability to control muscles and “let go” of a live high-voltage circuit. Safety hooks must be at least 1.75 m (6 ft) in length.
Thermal Imaging or Non-Contact Temperature Gun – A remote device used to monitor the temperature of the battery.
Lock Out/Tag Out Device – Used to protect from unplanned electrical system activation.
Floor Signage – Used to mark boundaries of a high-voltage work area.
