1. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Checking Transmission Lubricant Level → Transmission Filler Plug. Remove transmission filler plug/dipstick.
WARNING
Be sure that no lubricants or fluids get on tires, wheels or brakes when changing fluid. Traction can be adversely affected, which could result in loss of control of the motorcycle and death or serious injury. (00047d)
NOTICE
When draining or adding lubricant, do not allow dirt, debris or other contaminants to enter the engine. (00198a)
2. See Figure 1. Remove transmission drain plug. Drain transmission.
3. Clean and inspect drain plug and O-ring.
NOTICE
Do not over-tighten filler or drain plug. Doing so could result in a lubricant leak. (00200b)
4. Install drain plug with O-ring. Tighten to 19–28.5 N·m (14–21 ft-lbs). Do not over-tighten.
5. Fill the transmission with 0.83 L (28 fl oz) of recommended Harley-Davidson lubricant. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication → Checking Transmission Lubricant Level → Recommended Transmission Lubricants.
6. Check lubricant level. Add enough lubricant to bring the level between the add (A) and full (F) marks. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Checking Transmission Lubricant Level.
7. Install filler plug/dipstick. Tighten to 2.8–8.5 N·m (25–75 in-lbs).
