The Harley-Davidson intercom uses a voice activated (VOX) microphone. The microphone headset minimizes the transmission of hand-held microphone generated noise and provides for hand-free operation of the intercom.
The intercom is activated when a certain sound level is detected through the microphone. When a voice or sound exceeds the level, the voice is said to "break VOX". The voice or sound is transmitted to the headsets.
Once broken, a conversation can proceed uninterrupted. After the absence of sound or voice, there is a delay of approximately 2 seconds before the microphone is deactivated. This delay in deactivation allows for brief pauses in conversation.
Because background sounds such as loud exhausts, passing trucks, or car horns may unintentionally activate the intercom, the sound level necessary to break VOX is adjustable and referred to as VOX sensitivity. See Premium Sound System → Intercom Operation.
