1. | See Maintenance and Lubrication → SEAT → Seat Latch: Police Models. Remove seat retaining pin from support post.
2. | Remove bolt and nut at the front seat pivot. Remove seat.
3. | See Figure 1. Remove two flange nuts (2) and flat washers securing seat fairing. Raise and remove fairing (1).
4. | See Figure 2. If present, move purge solenoid (1) forward to release from top caddy. Release HFSM antenna (2) from top caddy and move out of the way.
5. | Remove fasteners (4) from rear of caddy.
6. | Cut cable ties (3) and move harnesses to allow more clearance for top caddy.
7. | See Figure 3. Release top caddy from front hold-down and rotate top caddy (1) out of the way.
8. | If equipped with security system siren, turn the ignition switch ON with the hands-free fob present to disarm the security system.
WARNING Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)
9. | Remove battery negative cable (black) from battery negative (-) terminal.
10. | Remove battery positive cable (red) from battery positive (+) terminal.
11. | Grasp lifting strap (2) and pull up to raise battery. When battery is extracted far enough to get a good grip, grasp battery and remove the rest of the way. |
1. | See Figure 3. Place the fully charged battery into compartment with terminals toward the front of the vehicle. Lay strap handle over top of battery.
NOTICE Do not over-tighten bolts on battery terminals. Use recommended torque values. Over-tightening battery terminal bolts could result in damage to battery terminals. (00216a)
2. | Connect battery positive cable (red) to battery positive (+) terminal. Tighten bolt to 6.8–7.9 N·m (60–70 in-lbs).
3. | Connect battery negative cable (black) to battery negative (-) terminal. Tighten bolt to 6.8–7.9 N·m (60–70 in-lbs).
NOTICE Keep battery clean and lightly coat terminals with petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion. Failure to do so could result in damage to battery terminals. (00217a)
4. | Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or corrosion retardant material to both battery terminals.
5. | See Figure 2. Rotate top caddy into position above battery and engage latch on hold-down bracket.
6. | If equipped, engage HFSM antenna (2) and purge solenoid (1) on top caddy. Verify all other connectors and harnesses are routed below the purge solenoid mounting tongue.
7. | Fasten top caddy to frame crossmember. Tighten screws (4) to 8.1–10.9 N·m (72–96 in-lbs).
8. | Secure harnesses to frame with cable ties (3).
9. | Insert front end of seat fairing under the seat hinge.
10. | See Figure 1. Lower rear of seat fairing into position. Install flange nuts (2) with washers and tighten to 6.7–10.9 N·m (60–96 in-lbs).
11. | Place seat on the motorcycle. Install bolt at the front seat pivot and tighten nut to 5.4–9.5 N·m (48–84 in-lbs).
12. | Lower seat into position on rear seat bracket.
13. | See Maintenance and Lubrication → SEAT → Seat Latch: Police Models. While pressing down on rear of seat, insert retaining pin in hole of support post. |
