Disconnection and Removal
1. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Seat: Police Models → Seat Latch: Police Models. Standing on left side of vehicle, press down on rear of seat and pull retaining pin from hole in support post.
2. Raise seat toward fuel tank console.
3. See Figure 1. Remove two flange nuts (with flat washers) to free back of seat fairing from rear fender studs. Raise and remove fairing.
NOTE
The electrical caddy has an opening in the front right corner allowing access to the negative battery terminal.
4. See Figure 2. Press latches (2) away from the ECM (1) and detach ECM from electrical caddy (3).
5. Remove fastener (4) from rear of electrical caddy.
6. Remove electrical caddy from battery compartment.
WARNING
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)
7. See Figure 3. Unthread bolt and remove battery negative cable (black) from battery negative (-) terminal.
8. Unthread bolt and remove battery positive cable (red) from battery positive (+) terminal.
9. Pull up on strap to lift battery out from compartment.
Installation and Connection
NOTICE
Connect the cables to the correct battery terminals. Failure to do so could result in damage to the motorcycle electrical system. (00215a)
WARNING
Connect positive (+) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00068a)
WARNING
Do not allow positive (+) battery cable to contact ground with negative (-) cable connected. Resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00069a)
NOTE
Make sure strap is inside compartment under battery. The strap handle should remain outside the compartment.
1. See Figure 3. Place the fully charged battery into compartment with terminals toward the front of the vehicle. Lay strap handle over top of battery.
NOTICE
Do not over-tighten bolts on battery terminals. Use recommended torque values. Over-tightening battery terminal bolts could result in damage to battery terminals. (00216a)
2. Insert bolt through battery positive cable (+) (red) into threaded hole of battery positive (+) terminal.
3. Tighten bolt to 6.8–10.8 N·m (60–96 in-lbs).
4. Insert bolt through battery negative cable (black) into threaded hole of battery negative (-) terminal.
5. Tighten bolt to 6.8–10.8 N·m (60–96 in-lbs).
NOTICE
Keep battery clean and lightly coat terminals with petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion. Failure to do so could result in damage to battery terminals. (00217a)
6. Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or corrosion retardant material to both battery terminals.
7. See Figure 2. Install electrical caddy over battery compartment.
8. Install electrical caddy fastener. Tighten to 20–27 N·m (15–20 ft-lbs).
9. Align ECM with latches on electrical caddy. Snap ECM into place and slide to left side of vehicle until ECM rests against bracket on left side of caddy and rests on guide pins. The negative battery terminal should be visible through the caddy.
10. Insert front end of seat fairing under the fuel tank.
11. See Figure 1. Lower rear of seat fairing onto rear fender studs. Install flange nuts with washers and tighten to 6.7–13.6 N·m (5–10 ft-lbs).
12. Move seat down until support post engages hole in rear seat bracket.
13. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Seat: Police Models → Seat Latch: Police Models. While pressing down on rear of seat, insert retaining pin in hole of support post.
