Disconnection and Removal
WARNING
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)
  1. See Figure 1. Standing on left side of vehicle, press down on rear of seat and pull retaining pin from hole in support post.
  2. Raise seat toward fuel tank console.
  3. Remove two flange nuts (with flat washers) to free back of shroud from rear fender studs. Raise and remove shroud.
  4. Unthread bolt and remove battery negative cable (black) from battery negative (-) terminal.
  5. Unthread bolt and remove battery positive cable (red) from battery positive (+) terminal.
  6. Using a T-40 TORX drive head, loosen bolt to move lip of hold-down clamp off edge of battery. Remove battery from battery box.
Installation and Connection
NOTICE
Connect the cables to the correct battery terminals. Failure to do so could result in damage to the motorcycle electrical system. (00215a)
WARNING
Connect positive (+) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00068a)
WARNING
Do not allow positive (+) battery cable to contact ground with negative (-) cable connected. Resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00069a)
1. Place the fully charged battery into the battery box, terminal side forward.
NOTICE
Do not over-tighten bolts on battery terminals. Use recommended torque values. Over-tightening battery terminal bolts could result in damage to battery terminals. (00216a)
2. Insert bolt through battery positive cable (red) into threaded hole of battery positive (+) terminal.
3. Tighten bolt to 6.8–10.9 N·m (60–96 in-lbs).
4. Insert bolt through battery negative cable (black) into threaded hole of battery negative (-) terminal.
5. Tighten bolt to 6.8–10.9 N·m (60–96 in-lbs).
NOTICE
Keep battery clean and lightly coat terminals with petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion. Failure to do so could result in damage to battery terminals. (00217a)
6. Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly, grease or corrosion-retardant material to both terminals.
7. Rotate the hold-down clamp so that the lip (with rubber pad) rests on the edge of the battery. Using a T-40 TORX drive head, tighten the clamp bolt to 20–27 N·m (15–20 ft-lbs).
8. Move seat down until support post engages hole in rear seat bracket.
9. See Figure 1. While pressing down on rear of seat, insert retaining pin in hole of support post.
