See Figure 1. The engine air cleaner is a paper/wire mesh air filter element. A water resistant rain sock is included with the vehicle to cover the exposed air filter element in wet or rainy conditions.
NOTE
See Figure 2. Japan model air cleaners do not include a rain sock.
Refer to Maintenance Scheduling → Regular Service Intervals → Regular Service Intervals: 2009 FLTRSE3. Remove air cleaner cover and inspect filter element at proper intervals. Under dusty conditions, inspect more often.
The paper/wire mesh air filter element should be washed in luke warm water with a mild detergent.
WARNING
Compressed air can pierce the skin and flying debris from compressed air could cause serious eye injury. Wear safety glasses when working with compressed air. Never use your hand to check for air leaks or to determine air flow rates. (00061a)

Install air filter before running engine. Failure to do so can draw debris into the engine and could result in engine damage. (00207a)
