WARNING
Do not use gasoline or solvents to clean filter element. Flammable cleaning agents can cause an intake system fire, which could result in death or serious injury. (00101a)
NOTICE
Install air filter before running engine. Failure to do so can draw debris into the engine and could result in engine damage. (00207a)
Inspect filter element at proper intervals and service as required. Under dusty conditions, inspect more often. Refer to Maintenance Scheduling → Service Records.
Rain Sock
In wet or rainy conditions, because the filter is exposed, water can enter the engine. When parked, water can cause internal engine corrosion or damage. When running, water can cause the engine to misfire.
In wet or rainy conditions, install the rain sock over the air cleaner assembly to prevent water intrusion.
Removal

Clean and Oil Filter
  1. Gently tap the filter to dislodge any loose dirt.
  2. Gently brush with a soft bristle brush.
  3. NOTE
    • The use of cleaning, drying or oiling methods or products other than the following can damage the filter and void the manufacturer's warranty.
    • K&N POWER KEEN AIR FILTER and K&N AIR FILTER OIL are available at your Harley-Davidson dealer.
  4. Clean the filter:
    1. Spray air filter cleaner liberally or roll the filter in a shallow pan of cleaner.
    2. Remove immediately, and let soak for ten minutes.
  5. NOTE
DO NOT use compressed air or a heat gun to speed drying.
  6. Rinse and dry the filter media from the inside with low-pressure tap water.
    1. Rinse off the filter from the clean side to the dirty side with low-pressure tap water.
    2. Shake off the excess water.
    3. Let the filter air dry.
  7. NOTE
See Figure 2. If air filter requires replacement, remove CVO medallion(5) from old air filter. Install the CVO medallion on the new filter. See a Harley-Davidson dealer.
  8. Inspect filter. Hold the filter up to a strong light source.
    1. The filter is clean is light is uniformly visible through the filter.
    2. If damaged or cannot be cleaned, replace the filter.
Oil the Filter
NOTE
DO NOT OVER-OIL THE AIR FILTER. Over-oiling impacts performance of the engine and/or certain engine components. If oil is still draining or dripping from the element 20 minutes after oiling, clean the filter element.
  1. Oil the filter.
  2. Spray or use a squeeze bottle to apply oil along each pleat.
  3. Allow the filter to absorb the oil for 20 minutes.
  4. After 20 minutes, inspect the filter. Carefully apply oil to any remaining white spots on the filter. Allow the filter to absorb the oil.
Installation
1. See Figure 2. Install medallion bar (4) and screw (3).
2. Install air filter (6) with clamp onto the intake tube (1) until it is fully seated in the groove.
NOTE
To prevent damage to the filter backplate, hold worm drive in approximate center of notch when tightening clamp.
3. Align the air filter element so the symbol on the front cover aligns properly. Tighten the clamp.
