NOTE
  1. Run motorcycle until engine is at normal operating temperature.
  2. See Figure 1. Remove the engine oil drain plug with O-ring (2). Drain engine oil.
NOTICE
Use Harley-Davidson oil filter wrench for filter removal. This tool can prevent damage to crankshaft position sensor and/or sensor cable. (00192b)
1. See Figure 2. Remove the oil filter using the OIL FILTER WRENCH (Part Number:HD-42311) or OIL FILTER WRENCH (Part Number:HD-44067). Clean the oil filter mounting surface of any old gasket material.
2. See Figure 3. Lubricate the gasket on new oil filter with engine oil. Install filter. Hand tighten oil filter 1/2 to 3/4 turn after gasket contacts filter mounting surface. Do not use oil filter wrench for oil filter installation.
3. See Figure 1. Install oil tank drain plug (2).
a. Inspect O-ring for tears or damage. Replace if necessary. Clean magnetic drain plug.
b. Install O-ring and drain plug. Tighten to 19–28.5 N·m (14–21 ft-lbs).
4. Refer to Table 1. Initially add 1.9 L (2.0 qt) of engine oil. Use the proper grade of oil for the lowest temperature expected before the next oil change. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication → Engine Lubrication → Recommended Engine Oils.

  1. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Checking and Adding Oil → Checking Oil Tank Level. Fully install oil filler plug/dipstick in oil tank.
  2. Perform engine oil level hot check.
  3. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Checking and Adding Oil → Engine Oil Level. Add engine oil to bring oil level to the upper groove on the dipstick (FULL HOT).
  4. Start engine and carefully check for oil leaks around drain plug and oil filter.
