Removing the Battery
WARNING
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)
1. Remove seat. Refer to Operation → Seat.
2. Remove top cover.
3. See Figure 1. Disconnect negative battery cable at negative terminal (5).
4. Remove positive terminal boot (3) from positive battery terminal. Disconnect positive battery cable (4).
5. Remove screws (3) and battery bracket (1).
6. Remove battery (2).

Installing the Battery
NOTICE
Connect the cables to the correct battery terminals. Failure to do so could result in damage to the motorcycle electrical system. (00215a)
1. Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or corrosion inhibitor to negative and positive terminals.
2. See Figure 1. Install battery (2).
3. Install battery bracket (1) and screws (3). Tighten.
Torque: 8.1–10.8 N·m (72–96 in-lbs) Battery bracket screws
WARNING

4. Install positive terminal screw through positive battery cable and into positive battery terminal (4). Tighten.
Torque: 6.8–7.9 N·m (60–70 in-lbs) Battery terminal screw
5. Install rubber boot over terminal.
6. Install screw through negative battery cable and into negative battery terminal (1). Tighten.
Torque: 6.8–7.9 N·m (60–70 in-lbs) Battery terminal screw
7. Install top cover.
8. Install fuse block.
9. Install seat. Refer to Operation → Seat.
WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
