NOTICE
The clutch control cable must be oiled and adjusted periodically to compensate for lining wear. Failure to oil and adjust the clutch control cable can result in equipment damage. (00203c)
NOTE
Perform maintenance more frequently in severe riding conditions. This includes extreme temperatures, dusty environments, mountainous or rough roads, long storage conditions, short runs or heavy stop/go traffic.
Adjust the clutch control cable at specified intervals. Refer to Service Intervals and Records → Service Records.
If the clutch slips under load or drags when released, the control cable may need to be adjusted or clutch service may need to be performed. See a Harley-Davidson dealer for service.
Clutch Adjustment
See Figure 1. The free play of the clutch lever should be 10–20 mm (0.39–0.79 in) measured at the end of the clutch lever before the clutch starts to loosen. If not, it can be adjusted at the handle end of the clutch cable as follows:
1. Remove the clutch cable dust boot (1).
2. Loosen the locknut (2).
3. Screw in or out the adjusting screw (3) to make the free stroke of the clutch meet the specified requirements.
4. Tighten the locknut.
If the free play cannot meet this specification, it can be adjusted through the locknut and adjusting nut of the cable and engine end.
