1. | Run motorcycle until engine is at normal operating temperature. | |
2. | Turn off engine. | |
3. | NOTE Engine oil is hot when removing drain plug. | |
4. | Allow oil to drain completely. Dispose of waste properly. | |
5. | Remove the radiator shroud. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Cleaning Radiator. NOTE It is not necessary to disconnect the regulator connectors. | |
6. | See Figure 2. Remove the regulator bolt and washer (1). Support the regulator as necessary. | |
7. | Remove the oil filter (3) with. Special Tool: OIL FILTER WRENCH (HD-51453) | |
8. | Discard filter. | |
9. | Clean the oil filter mount flange of any old gasket material. | |
10. | Lubricate gasket of new oil filter with clean engine oil. NOTE Do not use oil filter wrench for installation. | |
11. | Install new oil filter (3). Hand-tighten oil filter one-half to three-quarters of a turn after gasket initially contacts the filter mounting surface. | |
12. | Install the regulator with the bolt and washer. Tighten. Torque: 9–11 N·m (80–97 in-lbs) Regulator fastner | |
13. | Install engine oil drain plug and new O-ring. Tighten. Torque: 20–25 N·m (15–18 ft-lbs) Engine oil drain plug | |
NOTICE Do not overfill oil. Doing so can result in oil carryover to the air cleaner leading to equipment damage and/or equipment malfunction. (00190b) | ||
14. | Initially add engine oil. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Engine Lubrication. Volume: 2.4 L (2.5 qt) | |
15. | Perform engine oil level cold check. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Check Engine Oil Level. | |
16. | Start engine and carefully check for oil leaks around drain plug and oil filter. | |
17. | Install radiator shroud. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Cleaning Radiator. | |
18. | Perform engine oil level hot check. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Check Engine Oil Level. | |
19. | Add more oil as required. |
