Refer to Service Intervals and Records → Service Records for all maintenance schedules.
NOTE
Perform maintenance more frequently in severe riding conditions. This includes extreme temperatures, dusty environments, mountainous or rough roads, long storage conditions, short runs, heavy stop/go traffic or poor fuel quality.
Inspecting Air Filter (Under Seat Fuel Tank)
Removal
1. See Figure 1. Remove top cover.
a. Remove screw (1).
b. Lift rear of console (2) to remove.
c. Remove screws (3).
d. Remove top cover (4).
2. See Figure 2. Remove air box cover.
a. Disconnect connector (3).
b. Remove screws (1).
c. Remove air box cover (4).
3. See Figure 3. Remove air filter.
a. Cover velocity stacks (1) with clean rags.
b. Loosen clamp (2).
c. Remove air filter (3).
Cleaning Filter Element
WARNING
Do not use gasoline or solvents to clean filter element. Flammable cleaning agents can cause an intake system fire, which could result in death or serious injury. (00101a)
WARNING
Compressed air can pierce the skin and flying debris from compressed air could cause serious eye injury. Wear safety glasses when working with compressed air. Never use your hand to check for air leaks or to determine air flow rates. (00061a)
NOTE
Do not strike filter element on a hard surface to dislodge dirt.
1. Wash the filter element in lukewarm water and mild detergent.

NOTE
Do NOT use air cleaner filter oil on the Harley-Davidson air filter element.
Allow filter element to air dry or use low-pressure compressed air from the inside of the filter.

NOTE
The element is sufficiently clean when light is uniformly visible through the media.
Hold the filter element up to a strong light to check progress.
4. Replace the filter element if the element cannot be adequately cleaned or if the element is damaged.
Installation
1. See Figure 3. Install air filter.
a. Install air filter (3).
NOTE
Do not over tighten air filter clamp.
b. Tighten clamp (2). Tighten.
Torque: 2.5–2.7 N·m (22–24 in-lbs) Air filter clamp
c. Vacuum or wipe out any debris in the air filter box.
d. Remove rags from velocity stacks (1).
e. Verify gasket (4) is in place. Replace gasket if damaged.
2. See Figure 2. Install air box cover.
NOTE
When installing air box cover verify tab (2) is in position.
a. Install air box cover (4).
b. Install screws (1). Tighten.
Torque: 2.5–3.1 N·m (22–27 in-lbs) Air box cover screws
c. Connect connector (3).
3. See Figure 1. Install top cover.
a. Install top cover (4).
b. Install screws (3). Tighten.
Torque: 5.9–6.5 N·m (52–58 in-lbs) Top cover screws
c. Position tabs on bottom of console (2) into slots on top cover and lower rear into place.
d. Install screw (1). Tighten.
Torque: 3–4 N·m (27–35 in-lbs) Console screw
