NOTICE
Do not switch lubricant brands indiscriminately because some lubricants interact chemically when mixed. Use of inferior lubricants can damage the engine. (00184a)
- Change engine oil at the first 1,600 km (1,000 mi) for a new engine. After the initial service, change oil at regular intervals in normal service at warm or moderate temperatures. See Service Intervals and Records → Service Records.
- Change oil at more frequent intervals in cold weather or severe operating conditions. See Maintenance and Lubrication → Engine Lubrication.
| 1. | Run motorcycle until engine is at normal operating temperature. Turn off engine. | |||||
| 2. | Rest bike on jiffy stand. NOTE Oil must be drained while on jiffy stand to ensure all oil is removed from oil pan. | |||||
| 3. | Remove left chin spoiler extension. See Service Procedures → Chin Spoiler. | |||||
| 4. | Remove filler plug/dipstick. | |||||
| 5. | Figure 1 Remove magnetic oil drain plug (2). Allow oil to drain completely. a. Remove and discard O-ring (1). | |||||
| 6. | Remove oil filter using special tool. Do NOT use air tools. Special Tool: OIL FILTER WRENCH (HD-52991) | |||||
| 7. | Clean oil filter mount flange. | |||||
| 8. | Clean any residual oil from crankcase housing. | |||||
| 9. | Figure 2 Install new oil filter. a. Lubricate gasket with a thin film of clean engine oil. b. Fill new oil filter half full with engine oil. c. Install new oil filter. d. Hand-tighten oil filter three-quarters of a turn after gasket first contacts filter mounting surface. Do NOT use oil filter wrench for installation. | |||||
| 10. | Install new O-ring (1). a. Lubricate with clean engine oil. | |||||
| 11. | Install magnetic oil drain plug (5). Tighten. Torque: 20 N·m (15 ft-lbs) Plug, magnetic oil drain | |||||

| 14. | Run engine for 10 seconds. | |||||
| 15. | Turn off engine and remove filler plug/dipstick. NOTE The sidestand marks on the dipstick are used only for a quick reference when changing oil. | |||||
| 16. | Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication → Check Engine Oil Level → Engine Oil Dipstick (upright full mark). Add only enough oil to bring the level to the add quart mark. | |||||
| 17. | Verify proper oil level. a. Start engine and carefully check for oil leaks around drain plug and oil filter. b. Check engine oil level. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication → Check Engine Oil Level. NOTE Engine oil level must be checked at normal operating temperature. | |||||
