Drain Cooling System
WARNING
Do not loosen or remove pressure cap when cooling system is hot. The cooling system is under pressure and hot coolant and steam can escape from pressure cap, which could cause severe burns. Allow motorcycle to cool before servicing the cooling system. (00091c)
1. Allow system to cool.
2. Remove bottom pan. See Chassis → BOTTOM PAN.
3. See Figure 1. Reposition clamp (2).
4. Remove coolant line (3).
5. Remove right radiator cover. See Chassis → SIDE COVERS.
6.
NOTE
Make sure that there is no debris in shop towel. Debris in coolant system could lead to overheating and motorcycle damage.
Drain and discard used coolant.
a. Remove fill neck cap.
b. Cover fill neck with bunched up shop towel.
c. Stick air nozzle under shop towel and blow air into system to purge rest of coolant.
d. Install fill neck cap.
7. Install coolant line (3).
8. Reposition clamp (2).
9. Install bottom pan. See Chassis → BOTTOM PAN.
Fill Cooling System
NOTICE
De-ionized water must be used with the antifreeze in the cooling system. Hard water can cause scale accumulation in water passages which reduces cooling system efficiency, leading to overheating and motorcycle damage. (00195b)
NOTICE
Use only Genuine Harley-Davidson Extended Life Antifreeze and Coolant. Use of other coolants/mixtures may lead to motorcycle damage. (00179c)
1. Set motorcycle upright.
2. Remove filler neck cap.
3. Add coolant until fluid level reaches COLD line.GENUINE HARLEY-DAVIDSON EXTENDED LIFE ANTIFREEZE & COOLANT (26800188 or 26800191)
4. Connect AC power cord to vehicle inlet/charge receptacle.
5. Switch the OFF/RUN switch to the run position.
6. Wait for coolant pump to engage.
a. Coolant level will recede from COLD line.
7. Add coolant until fluid level reaches COLD line.
8.
NOTE
Coolant pump can also be turned on to bleed air from the cooling system using Digital Technicain II if the AC power cord is not available. If Digital Technician and power cord are not available, vehicle can be put into propulsion mode while upright. Care must be taken that the vehicle does not accelerate away by itself.
Run cooling pump until system is purged of air.
a. Refer to Cooling System → COOLANT FLOW → Operation → Coolant Flow. Open coolant bleed port screw (6) allowing air to escape. Hold open until only coolant emerges. Close and tighten bleed port screw as coolant starts to escape.
