Disconnection and Removal
Before you can inspect or disconnect your battery you must read the section containing information about seat removal.
WARNING
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)
  1. Remove nut from battery cable ground stud on frame, then remove negative (-) cable (black) from battery negative (-) terminal.
  2. Remove battery positive cable (red) from battery positive (+) terminal.
  3. Loosen lower rear bolt.
  4. Loosen upper rear bolt. Loosen vertical bolt at front of battery tray. Battery tray should be lowered enough to permit removal of battery.
  5. Remove top cover assembly.
  6. Remove side cover, if present.
  7. Lift battery from tray.
Installation and Connection
NOTICE
Connect the cables to the correct battery terminals. Failure to do so could result in damage to the motorcycle electrical system. (00215a)

Do not allow positive (+) battery cable to contact ground with negative (-) cable connected. Resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00069a)
1. Place the fully charged battery into the battery box, terminal side inward.
NOTICE
Do not over-tighten bolts on battery terminals. Use recommended torque values. Over-tightening battery terminal bolts could result in damage to battery terminals. (00216a)
2. Insert bolt through battery positive cable (+) (red) into threaded hole of battery positive (+) terminal.
3. Tighten bolt to 6.8–10.8 N·m (60–96 in-lbs).
4. Insert bolt through battery negative cable (-) (black) into threaded hole of battery negative (-) terminal.
5. Tighten bolt to 6.8–10.8 N·m (60–96 in-lbs).
NOTICE
Keep battery clean and lightly coat terminals with electrical contact lubricant to prevent corrosion. Failure to do so could result in damage to battery terminals. (00217b)
6. Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or corrosion retardant material to both battery terminals.
7. Install battery side cover, if present. Make sure the bottom of the cover's outboard side is properly seated inboard of the retaining lip on the base of the battery tray.
8. Install top cover assembly over side cover and battery. Install upper rear bolt finger tight.
9. Install lower rear bolt finger tight.
10. Tighten vertical bolt at front of battery tray to draw tray into position.
11. Tighten upper and lower rear bolts to 20.3–27.1 N·m (15–20 ft-lbs).
WARNING
After installing seat, pull upward on seat to be sure it is locked in position. While riding, a loose seat can shift causing loss of control, which could result in death or serious injury. (00070b)
12. Install seat.
