Disconnection and Removal
Before you can inspect or disconnect your battery you must read the section containing information about seat removal.
WARNING
Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a)
  1. Remove seat. See Maintenance and Lubrication → SEAT.
    2. NOTE
    The battery is located below the seat on the right side.
  2. See Figure 1. Remove the screw (3) below the battery cover.
  3. Remove battery cover.
  4. Models with sirens:
    1. Keyed ignition: Turn the ignition switch ON with the hands-free fob present to disarm the security system.
    2. Keyless ignition: With an assigned fob present, set OFF/RUN switch to RUN.
  5. Remove the negative cable (black) from battery negative terminal (1).
  6. Remove battery positive cable (red) from battery positive terminal (2).
  7. Remove the rubber hold-down strap (4) and slide the battery out of the battery compartment.
Installation and Connection
NOTICE
Connect the cables to the correct battery terminals. Failure to do so could result in damage to the motorcycle electrical system. (00215a)

1. Place the fully charged battery into the battery compartment.
2. Models with sirens:
a. Keyed ignition: Turn the ignition switch OFF.
b. Keyless ignition: Set OFF/RUN switch to OFF.
NOTICE
Do not over-tighten bolts on battery terminals. Use recommended torque values. Over-tightening battery terminal bolts could result in damage to battery terminals. (00216a)
3. Insert bolt through battery positive cable (red) into threaded hole of battery positive terminal (2).
4. Tighten bolt to 6.8–7.9 N·m (60–70 in-lbs).
5. Insert bolt through battery negative cable (black) into threaded hole of battery negative terminal (1).
6. Tighten bolt to 6.8–7.9 N·m (60–70 in-lbs).
NOTICE
Keep battery clean and lightly coat terminals with petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion. Failure to do so could result in damage to battery terminals. (00217a)
7. Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or corrosion retardant material to battery terminals.
8. Install battery side cover.
9. See Figure 1. Install side cover screw (3). Tighten to 2.26–4.52 N·m (20–40 in-lbs).
10. Install seat. See Maintenance and Lubrication → SEAT.
